The Detroit Pistons have agreed to sign Boban Marjanovic to a three-year, $21 million offer sheet.

Marjanovic emerged this season as a rookie with the San Antonio Spurs, posting some of the NBA's most impressive per minute stats.

Marjanovic is a restricted free agent but the Spurs will be unable to match and they've since moved onto agree to a two-year, $6 million deal with Dewayne Dedmon.

The Pistons signed Aron Baynes, who also was previously with the Spurs. to a three-year, $20 million contract last offseason.

Pistons seem to have a thing for our backup centers, don't really get it for them they've got a ton of money invested in the center position now.

SVG probably thinks Baynes isn't staying beyond this year.

There could also be a trade in the works.

Would love to get some insight from Spurs fans on Boban. What are the Pistons getting here? Is he capable of being the first big off the bench if Baynes is traded? How is he defensively?

He played 95% garbage minute so it's hard to tell but he is very skilled. Defense down low is fine but he hurts you outside of that because he is so slow.

I'm sad to see him go though, seemed like a great guy and I think his potential and positives would outshine any negatives but I guess Spurs don't match because we have enough slow big men already.

Thanks! I appreciate the feedback! It will be interesting to see if his offensive skills look as good in a different system. I guess the fact he was mainly used in garbage time says something.
I don't expect him to stuck defending outside in the perimeter in SVGs defensive schemes. Normally the big drops back in the pnr covering the lane to allow the guard to get back. How is he as a rim protector?

He has a lot of offensive skills for sure and I'm certain he is very strong but it's like he never learnt how to use it or the whole centre of gravity thing because much smaller guys managed to push him backwards when he tried to back them down.

He strangely never blocked shots like a Bradley or Muresan but again it's hard to know because of his minutes came when guys weren't really attacking.

Why won't the Spurs match?

Can't they go over the cap tosign Boban if they wanted to?

or do they simply not want to pay the contract?

he is not worth it to the spurs. i mean he is ok, but his footwork is very very slow and his stats only look good because he never really played outside of garbage time. he seems to have a good iq and skills but again, very slow which means he is very limited in how he can fit into the modern nba.

I think his lack of mobility had a lot to do with that. Couldn't rotate quick enough to block anything that wasn't coming directly at him.

I'm guessing he doesn't block shots because he jumps lower than Duncan. Boban doesn't even jump to dunk.. Let alone block shots. But I think he's taller than his listed height. He looks more like 7'5". Him standing straight up bothers shots as much as the threat of shot blocking.

Boban is really hard to read because he does only play in garbage time. He held up well against Whiteside and Drummond though. Other than that, garbage time mostly consist of 6'9" skinny guys trying to outrebound him.

Can't play him against small ball lineups though.. But that's common with a lot of bigs.

Anyways, I guess Stan loves how well thought our bigs are.

Very true. But it's not like he did that 20+ minutes either.

Honestly prefer he didn't come back because he isn't effective enough defensively to play every night. Pop' should of played him gradually but consistently in the OKC series, he would of helped quite possibly win a game with his length around the basket.

Glad we got a guy like Dedmon instead, just the type of long, athletic big who is effective on both sides of the floor; and stronger defensively. Been missing a guy like him since Elson who had some subtly impactful games in the '07 playoffs - only Dedmon is better as a whole and even more athletic than Elson.
