I feel like this scenario is presented every couple months, Patterson fails to impress each time he is given a crack at the starting lineup. Can he start? Yes. Is he a legit starter in this league? No.

His energy coming off the bench is more useful than anything he provides as a starter.

Obviously he is our best option currently unless one of the kiddies blows us away between now and November.

2Pat is a fine bench player, but not a starter. Masai needs to figure out a way to get Cousins over here.

He's not a starter on a team with championship aspirations. It is unfortunately that simple at the end of the day.

Same thing I wanted to say. If Pat could average 12-14 ppg and 8 rebounds with 37% 3pt shooting then he is a starting calibre PF. But he doesn't. Too inconsistent. Awesome bench big is all he is.

Mods, just ban this guy.

I figured that was a fair request if we didn't have the same opinion.

I made the same case last year and thought man 2Pat is smart surely he sees how bad we need a next level PF he will get after it and then we can compete and pay him starter money. But, he was terrible. Actually was way better the year before off bench then got better when sent to bench last year?!?

Your post is why I wanted Thad Young. You would have not given up much Ross and 27 maybe future second to get him and he makes you better now with out mortgaging the future.
Beating the Cavs I think there are only 3-5 PF in the league that get us close.

When he was sent to the bench at the start of last season, he went on the coldest shooting streak of his Raptors' career.

I think Patt put too much pressure on himself to fit in and play differently with the starters at the beginning of last year.

After playing so much basketball with them at the end of the season in 2015, to close most 4th quarters for us, and starting in the playoffs, it has become much more natural to him and this year he can just play his game and let the 3 ball fly when he is open. He is also good at pnr defense beside Val.

Plus, it's a contract year for him.

Lies.

Did you miss the part where Casey said exactly that during the playoffs. Yeah you did. And if you don't think it's possible, Jamal Crawford.

I can believe what was said by the organization or your hypothesis about pressure even though he closes every game.

All off-season and training camp last year he said over and over again that he wanted to start and he felt that it was his job to lose.

We're talking about who our starting PF will be for this upcoming season. If you're specifically talking about what was said in the playoffs, that's completely different.

You don't think Patt would love another shot at being our starter this year? After all the experience he gained with the starting unit last season? Especially when he is entering a contract year?

You're making an assumption that you know what he wants and whats best for him. He has said he doesn't like starting. I used Crawford as an exmaple because it was similar. He realized part way through his career he was more comfortable coming off the bench, and that didn't ever change just because it was a contract year. If PP changes his mind, then that's fine. But he didn't play well at the start of last year and didn't play as well starting in the playoffs as when he came off the bench.

As for all the experience he gained playing with the starters it really doesn't matter that he starts with them, its as long as he finishes. And thats what he did all year. As long as he plays 30 minutes. People get hung up on "starting" like it matters. Last year we were 17 of the last 20 games at one point and some people were insisting he should start. Smh. Its who is the PF that plays more minutes that matters. And that we have anyone better than Scola this year that matters, since last year I think you could literally hear his joints aging by February.

And quite frankly, we don't even know who the other PF and Centre are at the moment. Without knowing if the play offense badly, or defense badly, I would say nothing will be settled with PP until thats settled.

But you repsonded with "lies", without having your facts down. And its not a lie, and that was the point of my post.

He plays his heart out- really underrated defence, during the playoffs it seems that guards would get a switch on him and they'd think he'd be a slow PF. Not the case at all, he held his own. Don't get me wrong though, he isn't a starter. Really great stretch 4 off the bench- not a good started.

hahahahaha MU failed so hard at making a trade everyone is trying to justify starting Patterson lmao too funny

not only is it a horrible idea, but it's just wasting an asset. Better to trade him now bc if you start him you'll be forced to pay him 18 million per next year at least!!!!!

And because we have no Power Forwards at all, we'll have no choice but to do it. Horrible decision!

Does it really matter if he starts or comes off the bench if he's getting 30+ minutes?

It does during contract negotiations. Starter money ~ $18 million and bench money ~$10 million.

I'm not a huge fan of Patterson the player but at this point in time he is a asset. But disliked that he was out of shape at the beginning of last year and really a non-factor in the playoffs. You might be right he will elevate his game because it is a contract year but history refutes this. He seem to be more comfortable in a secondary roll and definitely would not look at resigning him at a larger contract. Obviously because of our cap situation we are extremely limited in getting a better starting PF might not be possible. Our MLE our best might get T. Jones or Bass who are both flawed.
