Re: Official Trade Thread - Part XXXI
It does seem inevitable.
Ted & Ernie's shot at redemption, and a chance to salvage the offseason. They do bring home a local star after all, and demonstrate to everyone they had a plan and it worked!
"Gay shot 34 percent from deep last season, as he's transitioned to more of a stretch four. That makes his value much higher for the modern NBA considering his strength and versatility, even with relative inefficiency. He averaged 17.5 points and 6.5 rebounds last season for Sacramento."
Gay essentially steps into the role vacated by Pierce/Dudley. Maybe he'll also benefit from the "Wall effect".

It's a lot like saying that our plan was to make an ice cream sundae. We executed it to perfection. Of course, we were dissappointed that we have no ice cream. But have you seen the bowl? And those nuts are pretty good.

I don't think Gortat for Gay is going to happen, Now if we had called them being signing Ian, and we got Gay for assets then signed a center for 3 mill or so as a backup, like deadman, festus, plumlee, zeller and a number of others. That would have been ok by me. But I do not want to give up any players for Gay, he would help our team as is but not if we have to lose a piece to get him.

"...got Gay for assets" -- ? You mean just for cap room somehow? Surely you don't think this team can give up any more picks!
"deadman" -- dude, that's kind of bad karma. Kid's name is "Dedmon."
Btw, I don't think Rudy Gay, even acquired for nothing, would help this team one bit. Never anywhere near as good as he was thought to be, now he's just an over the hill volume chucker.

Sacramento has too many big men, so why would they want Gortat? They are trying to trade Koufos and already have Skal Labisserie and Willie Cauley Stein along with Boogie. Apparently they only want big men from Kentucky.

No I don't want to loose any more picks, my main point was, A gay for gortat trade would hurt the team and probably makes us worse than better. Get gay for picks or assets, whereas unlikely, would at least not make the team worse, I don't think any player for assets trade can make a team worse, only neutral or better in the moment, down the line losing the assets could hurt, but not at the moment. plus we would not have done the Ian deal and would have been forced to find a cheaper option at center, which we would have all enjoyed. Don't get me wrong I don't really want Gay at all, I am just playing devil's advocate here.

Not if it makes Porter+Pick for Gay more likely.

No, that would not be a good result, would it?
But I don't think even our dunce-caps will make that trade. Brooks has said how high he is on Porter, they have stated that they had a goal to get younger not older, etc. etc.
I think we'll be spared this particular nightmare.

Brooks is high on everybody. At least that's what he says. A lot different than what Wittman would say, since he was more brutally honest. While I'm not that high on Otto, I'm definitely down on Rudy and I'm a Baltimore guy now (last 25 years). He's a pretty good player but never got the sense he wanted to be great and coasted on his own ability. If Otto bulked up, he could be similar to Rudy when he was in his prime and a much more efficient shooter. But the one thing I'd like Otto to improve aside from strength is creating his own shot and not needing John Wall to do it for him.

So, in effect, the Wizards trade Morris, Porter, Gortat and our 2017 R1 pick in return for Kevin Love & Rudy Gay.
At this point in his career, I don't think Rudy Gay is as productive a player as Otto Porter -- and Otto is getting better at a fast clip. Gay is going downhill. Otto is 23; he has a terrific future. We have him for this year and next at a reasonable salary, and we should be able to keep him beyond that point. If we don't do that, tho we should, he will certainly be a very tradable asset.
Rudy Gay will be 30 in 5 week. He's signed for this year with a player option for next year, and he's making more than twice what Otto makes. At the end of next year, he'll be unrestricted.
Having Rudy Gay instead of Otto Porter removes one of the few assets we have that can build this team over the mid- and long-term. Very much a move in the style of Ernie Grunfeld. I wouldn't trade Porter straight up for Gay, wouldn't consider that deal for even a minute. Moreover, it's pretty obviously a bad trade straight up.
Hence, I'd have to have an awfully high opinion of Kevin Love to trade Gortat and our R1 pick next year (a mid-lottery pick most likely) for him. He's a good player, but no I don't have that high an opinion of him. On top of which, he's signed through June 2020 for $21 - 25m a year. Gortat, who is an extremely good player, is signed for 3 more years at what is now an extremely attractive salary given his productivity and the cap.
Making this trade, we would be completely ham-strung. Cap flexibility gone. Best young player gone. High draft pick gone. You may think the starting lineup it leaves would be an improvement. Certainly Love at the 4 is an improvement over Morris. For the rest, no. Not to mention that it's a $90m a year starting lineup -- and locked in for years!
And, it decimates our bench -- Smith at backup Center? Burke our primary backup PG? An unproven Satoransky w/ the entire weight of backing up an often injured Beal? Nicholson, who earned 823 minutes w/ a 35 win team last year, becomes the primary, really the only, depth behind Love? Plus we'd have no cap space to maneuver with. We'd be stuck a while with whatever we had.
This is not how to become a better team. This is how to become a bad dream. (well... we are that already -- a worse dream, then, and a third-rate team).

Well I agree it's risky, but at the same time what do we have to lose. I'm not sure I would do it but I think it's worth consideration if it's even possible. It would max our cap and limit our flexibility. At the least it would create some buzz for a team that is basically dead in the water.
A starting 5 of Mahinmi, Love, Gay, Beal, Wall should be ECF worthy. It's a unit that can shoot and score the ball, and rebound.
The bench is a bit thin, depending on Oubre and Satoransky to become major contributors.
I hate to give Porter, I am a fan of his and was a major proponent for drafting him, but you have to give up something to get something, and he is one of our few assets, plus it makes the salaries work.

I couldn't be less interested in trading for Gay, particularly if it involves Porter going out.
Trading for Love could work from a roster balancing perspective, but I wouldn't give up that much for him. I'd start at Gortat straight up for Love and maybe throw in a protected pick or Markieff Morris. That's about it. If they want more, then forget it.

I think we should be done moving any players till the deadline, See how the team is playing and what we are lacking. If we are getting buyers remorse over beal we might be able to sell him to the 76ers or the kings at the deadline. same with ian or Gortat, we could move them to a center desperate team. But if everything is going well we might not need to, I say lets wait it out and see how things are at the deadline as far as trades go .

Re: Official Trade Thread - Part XXXI
Cleveland needs Love save against Golden State. I doubt they trade him before February. He was playing well before the Finals. He just doesn't match up well against them. I mean not many power forwards do match up against Draymond Green and now KD will be playing some S4. But for fantasy purposes, the only way I trade for him is if you get rid of Gortat and play him with a defensive center like Mahinmi.
