Re: Heat sign Derrick Williams
He's not as bad as most of you think. He can actually get points.
The thing is - he's not really a shooter at all, and that's what we need next to Justise and Hassan. I'm not really seeing the fit here.
Also, since it's a 1 year deal - I'm not sure what's the upside for us. Even he does surprisingly well (which I won't rule out) - we'll just be in a position of having to overpay to keep him next year with a even higher salary cap.
Ok move overall, he's young and has some talent.

Re: Heat sign Derrick Williams
Derrick Williams is a less stupid, worse shooting, better penetrating version of Michael Beasley. He's still just 25, him being less stupid might mean he can be coachable. Worth a gamble, cheap and short term.

Re: Heat sign Derrick Williams
Beasley is superior in talent to Willams but Williams was always billed as being as good as beasly. they ahve a similar gamge and similar weaknesses. Beasleys biggest fault was too emotional, weedhead and immature. We also used him wrong. Less skilled Beasley without the offcourt red flags.

I think the main thing is that it was a 1 year deal. I'd be surprised if we made any signings longer than that of any value

The fact it's a 1 year deal is Riley admitting the guy is no good.
If you expect a 25 year old to be good you don't offer just 1 year.
Seems a waste of time to me.

He averaged 9.3 PPG, 3.7 RPG & shoots around 45% & shoots 29% from 3... He's not a good player. Just another scrub... How can some of you say this is a good move by dumb ass Riley

Honestly, your better off with Williams for 1 year than committing to a long term deal with say, Trevor Booker. The Heat are entering a transition year where they need a lot of questions answered. Long term flexibility is the number 1 priority right now.

Not necessarily. Williams could've probably signed a 3-4 year deal somewhere else for more money but he's betting on himself. He said it himself that he likes how we develop guys and make them more valuable. If he shows promise this season it'll benefit him in the long run.

I doubt it. We went after him pretty late and if anyone would of offered him a good contract before we showed interest, I'm sure he would of jumped on it. He was just saying the right things about the team who signed him. He would of been singing the praises of whatever team got him. There was a reason he wasn't inked. He isn't very good

I agree he isn't that good but I don't think he was bad enough to be out of the league. He was waiting for the right deal and I still think he could've got a longer deal elsewhere.

Wow some of you guys are so hard to please. It's only a signing to fill out the roster. The guy is still 25 so he can still improve and become a solid bench player for us. If you ask me I'll take him over McRoberts easily at this point. If he doesn't work out we don't resign him. If he plays great we offer him a deal in the offseason. He's not the best player but how many great players are left? It's not like we can win the title this year anyway.

Phish Tank wrote:Knick fan coming here in peace. I wanted to share with you what to expect from D-Will as a member of the Heat:
Strengths:
1) He's best suited for an up-tempo style of offense.
2) If you have an offense that utilizes backdoor cuts, he'll feast off those and turn those opps into alley-oop dunks.
3) He can get to the line.
4) He can dunk with just force and nasty to it.
Weaknesses:
1) Can't stay on the floor longer because he's not a great rebounder or defender consistently.
2) Not really much of a passer, so don't expect the ball to move around if he gets it.
3) Hits the corner three at a decent clip, but ends up taking more more threes from the top than on the corners, which is a reason he's not shooting as well as he should be.
4) 50% shooter from 2, but it's a funny breakdown because he's almost unstoppable under the rim dunking and is shooting 45% from mid-range (10-16 ft), but is less than 30% shooting from 3-10 ft and 35% from long 2. Sadly, it's a trend his entire career which is why he's not as consistent of a force in the half-court game as many wished he'd be.
We can definitely work with that as a franchise. He just needs proper direction and adequate coaching. His weaknesses can turn to strength in the right system, especially his weird shot selection/shooting percentages.

^^This. Heat need at least twelve players on the roster, they nead bodies. And this is it, Derrick Williams is a body, there aren't that many left out there anymore. In comparison to say Jankovic, he's got a few years of NBA experience and has at least proven himself to be a rotational player in this league.
Also, if Williams was undrafted and Riley found him playing overseas, all of you would be praising him as a solid player. Because he's No 2 pick he's a scrub. Try looking at him without the burden of expected stardom. 5 mil per year for 15-20 mpg combo forward seems about right, McBob gets more money...
As for his defense - remember, this is Miami. This is where Beasley and Gerald Green played decent defense
