Let's Grade the Miami Heat's Offseason - July 8

Post#1 » by gom » Fri Jul 8, 2016 5:04 pm

I thought it would be instructive to track how our opinions change after the blockbuster trades and signings that await to compensate for the kick in the nuts of losing Wade. Thus here is another poll (I'd do it inside one of our offseason threads if having polls in *any* message was an option, but it's not.)

Vote once please.

If you have something to say about how the FO screwed Wade or Wade screwed the FO, this is a better place than the offseason trade forum.

I think you grade an off-season AFTER it finishes.
I remember when the Dolphins were perennial contenders

HIF kinda has a point. that's Rare.

But also GOM - how do we even define success in this offseason?

Is overpaying for the Evan Turners of the world to create a 8# seed = success?

Is it actually saving cap space for next year and putting a weak team on the court to add a high upside draft pick = success?

Is it adding prospects and young guys that might help down the road?

We're at a crossroads and I'm not sure what we're trying to achieve at this point.

We're not contending this year - that I Know for sure. Regardless of what we try this summer.

I plan to ask the same question again later, hoping it changes. It's just for fun, HIF.

I would judge us by determining whether we are further towards our future goals and certainly look to see if we've added young prospects (since we're clearly not contending) without high future financial commitments, anticipating that they have contracts where we have a possibility of gaining their bird rights.

As soon as Bosh got blood clots, are window was closed. Wade was not bringing in a ring by himself, so when LJ left we were done, but was not fully aware. 2 seasons later realization is finally setting in. We have a starting point, Pat and his operation that includes SPO. Some promising pieces that might pan out. I ain't got no worries. ... check the sig.. it might not happen right away but there will be more parades.

Its weird because I think we deserve a low grade, but I don't think it necessarily means our future's awful, its just the Wade thing wasn't supposed to end that way. I'd say C- or D+, can't go too low since we did keep Hassan and that was important. That said its not like this is hugely negative going forward, people will overreact and say no players will trust us now or Riley has lost his touch, but that will pass, and Wade returning wasn't going to make this an A offseason anyways (only Durant could have done that).

Seriously? It's a 0. You would be kidding yourself to believe otherwise. Messy divorce with the greatest player in your history and no significant move forward which comes close to compensating for that. That's a zero.

This is very well put. But on the Wade thing, take emotions out of the equation and it's probably best for the organization to move on. Again superstars, especially historic players to an organization, become an obligation on the back end of their careers. Look at Dallas. They can't properly rebuild because Dirk is around and they have been the picture of mediocre for the last 5 years. But then you look up in Boston, and they were able to turn the thing around quickly and do what's best for the organization since Pierce and KG left.

Miami's in such a tricky situation because if Bosh is healthy and the young guys continue to grow, they have a very good team. And I think Dragic will have a terrific season running the offense by himself. Will the team win it all, no. But they could easily be a playoff team with max cap space next summer. But if Bosh isn't back healthy and the young guys regress Miami could be one of the 5 worst teams in the league with a 2 year window to build through the draft before they start owing picks for Dragic. And they will recoup value for Dragic if they move him.

It wasn't time for Miami to make a significant move right now. Too many unanswered questions as to what this group is. Is it worth adding to or should it be broken up (mainly talking about the Dragic, Bosh, Whiteside big 3).

Miami put a lot of chips on the table a few years ago by bringing in Dragic to try to extend the run with Wade and Bosh. But due to health it wasn't meant to be.
