If someone's been with a team 3+ years and the team has cap space they can renegotiate and extend
This is a big deal though, shows James is committed here and shows players that the Rockets take care of their superstars

Since this affects the upcoming season does that mean we are now out of cap space?

From what I understand the Rockets are still slightly below the cap, but it's possible that they are over it now.
They'll probably match Motiejunas, and after that any roster moves will be small, barring trades.

Well we supposedly had 9 million left but I assume that's all going to harden now?

Except we can go over the top to match any offer for DMo holding his full Bird rights, then rounding up a few minor pieces with whatever trade exceptions we have left.

Yup. We also have about 5000 forwards and no backup point guard, I expect that to change

this explained it
you need cap space to renegotiated extension
so yeah
we don't have any cap space left
but we have DMo right so we can go over the cap to re-sign or match his offer sheet

Re: Harden signs extension(4 yr, 118 mil)
I'm reading some comments from Rockets fans who are upset about using the remaining cap space to make this move. I don't understand that at all. Who would you rather spend the money on?
Committing to your star long-term is the best move the Rockets could have made. It will be a very different picture next year in free agency knowing that Harden & the Rockets are committed to one another.

Thanks for posting that. I don't go to Clutchfans very often, but that guy's cap knowledge always impresses me.

scrubs showing flashes in playoff is getting paid like 15M a year
who do they expect Morey can sign for 9M?
Terrence Jones?
i actually like the move
Harden is your best player
you want him to be the highest paid on the team
don't make him feel left out when Ryan Anderson is getting huge pay raise
no more cap space mean Morey can't use it to sign Onuaku to 4 years contract (he loves to do that for 2nd round pick)
C - Capela, Nene, Onuaku (don't know he sign yet)
PF - Anderson, Beasley, Harrell, DMo (unsign yet)
SF - Ariza, McDaniels, Dekker
SG - Harden, Gordon, Brewer
PG - Beverley
team is already stack except PG
team are interesting in Gentile
i think Morey is looking for deal to trade Gentile draft right+Brewer contract for a PG

It's only a two year extension so I don't know how much of difference really it makes in the long term. This also seriously affects our cap next summer not just now so it hurts your free agent hunt.
What if that 9 million got us a difference maker? We already had a poor summer with getting two very injury prone non stars and a very old past his prime center who was never a rim protector.
This summer has been such a disappointment. James saw all the money flying around and got jealous while morey panicked after seeing wade and Durant screw over their teams.

Re: Harden signs extension(4 yr, 118 mil)
That's a very negative, worst-case-scenario point of view!
As with any Rockets off-season, I have full faith in Morey to find the cap room if he needs the cap room.

And what free agents would come next season with the chance that the teams best player would leave the very next year? Evan Turner got 15 million per and you think we could get a big impact player with 9? Lol. Getting your max guys to be locked in as long as possible is a no brainer. Even if it's just a year you do it.

He's not saying get an impact player for 9M, he's saying what if that 9M could be the difference in getting a big name. I see the point of view and it is entirely logical. Like I said earlier, if that is the case then I have faith in Morey to find that extra cap room somehow.
We don't know what the cap will look like next year. It is very possible that Harden would be the best player the Rockets could have ended up with in a year like that anyway. I'm seeing this deal in a bit more positive light than texasholdem - I'm seeing it as Harden & the Rockets solidifying their relationship with each other. I'm liking what it could mean moving forward.
Wow...could "eternal optimist" Mr. E be returning? Maybe this past season didn't kill him off after all!

Re: Harden signs extension(4 yr, 118 mil)
Harden could have waited to get paid. It's not like he's making nothing right now. He complains about his supporting cast then doesn't want to sacrifice personally for the team to get better players like Dirk and Duncan and Wade have done.
