Intentional Foul Rule Change

Post#1 » by Han Solo » Wed Jul 13, 2016 12:35 am

Just saw one of the mods post this in the Drummond/Val thread. Thought I'd share it here.

It's Official: New Intentional Foul Rule

Post#3 » by Todd3 » Wed Jul 13, 2016 12:44 am

Not the major change that most wanted/expected.

Basically just added the 2 minute rule to every period and eliminated the inbounds foul and JJ Redick play.

Rules Changes Relating to Deliberate Away-From-The-Play Foul Rules

1. The current rule for away-from-the-play fouls applicable to the last two minutes of the fourth period (and last two minutes of any overtime) – pursuant to which the fouled team is awarded one free throw and retains possession of the ball – will be extended to the last two minutes of each period.

2. For inbounds situations, a defensive foul at any point during the game that occurs before the ball is released by the inbounder (including a “legitimate” or “natural” basketball action such as a defender fighting through a screen) will be administered in the same fashion as an away-from-the-play foul committed during the last two minutes of any period (i.e., one free throw and possession of the ball).

3. The flagrant foul rules will be used to protect against any dangerous or excessively hard deliberate fouls. In particular, it will presumptively be considered a flagrant foul if a player jumps on an opponent’s back to commit a deliberate foul. Previously, these type of fouls were subject to being called flagrant but were not automatic.

Still better than nothing though and that's 6 extra mpg Dre can play now with no worries. We can now play him the first 6-7 min of every period or until we're in the bonus, then rest him the next 3-4 min while we're in the bonus, and then play him the last 2 min. That should get us 32-36 mpg of Dre with no intentional foul FTs.

This doesn't change a thing..he will still get hacked to no end if he doesn't improve his free throw shooting

Cant teams still foul Andre when he goes to set a screen like last year in the last two minutes? SVG rarely put Andre back into the game because you couldn't do anything with him. imo this change does nothing.

Still not sure about that part because it says this for the inbounds part:

“natural” basketball action such as a defender fighting through a screen) will be administered in the same fashion as an away-from-the-play foul committed during the last two minutes of any period (i.e., one free throw and possession of the ball).

So does that mean fouling a big while he's setting a pick is now deemed intentional in last 2 min too and will be 1 FT + possession?

Or is that considered part of "the play" so it's still legal?

yeah this definitely sucks. Basically it gives him 8 minutes of play. That may not be bad, and Stan could tweak the rotations to take advantage of it. Still, 8 minutes of no hack a Dre is decent at least.

At the end of the day the rule change doesn't matter, I still want Dre to improve his free throw shooting.

Honestly I doubt they will heavily enforce the rule. Stupid.

Copied from the Around the League thread:

Eh, it helps a little. Another six minutes a game that Andre can't be ridden like a horse by Dellavedova.

I'm sure SVG will manage Andre's minutes accordingly and have him out there to end every quarter.

Unless I'm not reading properly, it sounds to me that any foul that happens before the ball is in play is treated as an intentional foul.

Agree, but he's talking about during play in the last 2 min when Dre gets fouled setting a pick.

For the inbounds, they specify no fouls allowed while setting picks before inbounding, so you can't "cheat the rule".

Does that apply to the last 2 min during play too?

Wouldn't they foul him before the inbounds play constantly? That would change it a bit... i think?

Dre played 33mpg this season. Assuming he plays about the same amount next season, and plays in the last 2 minutes of every quarter, that still leaves 25mpg in which he can be hacked compared to 31mpg last year.

If a team really wants to hack a him early in the quarter they can just sub in someone that isn't in the rotation to foul him. When the Rockets used it earlier this season they did had put themselves into the pentalty 9 seconds into the 3rd quarter. We were up by 10 at this point, and within about 2 and a half minutes of game time the Rockets tied it. We won anyway because we were just outright the better team, but I still think this will have very little impact overall aside from the "jump on back" exploit during a FT and pre-inbound foul.

Yes they can still do the KJ McDaniels thing, but teams don't actually do that very often. More often than not, off-ball fouls on Dre in the first 10 min will just reset the clock until we're in the bonus naturally (which usually isn't until after the 6-7 min mark on average). At which point we use that time as his rest time, and then we can play him again at the 2 min mark.

Baynes never really made people "pay" for us having to sit Drummond (didn't expect him to either).. laugh all you want (some will), I honestly think Boban could be a big headache for the opposing team. Our scouting dept. has pretty much been spot-on since SVG took over. They are all high on Boban. If he pans out, its pick your poison. If Boban continues to play at 20+++ PER and his per-min averages are all sky high still, opposing teams won't have it much easier with him. Release the BOBAN..

I think they could stand by Andre and wait for the inbounds pass before fouling...not a big difference

Why would you extend it at the end of quarters? Why not the last eight minutes of the game? Nonsensical.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -

2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

This is going to be gradual, I guarantee it. Give it one, maybe two years and it will be made for the whole game.

They are testing it and are going to study the flow of the game and they needed a bigger sample size then 2 minutes.

This is absolutely the study phase.
