BOS receives: DJ
LAC receive: Gay/Koufos + pick(s)
SAC receives: 2017 BK pick + Jerebko or Olynyk or Bradley or Amir (for $$$ matching purposes) + other filler 2nd's?
Something along those lines? BOS cashes in some of their 10,000 picks without gutting their roster, and salaries/contract years get shuffled along, Horford can play PF, Clips get a living SF and cheaper C and SAC basically plays facilitator by picking up potential Top 3 pick and salary dump.
I'm not a huge fan of it either, but I think Boston is desperate for a star, any star, and is willing to take on a possible bad fit to add another (realistically they will work well as a pairing, but it just puts Horford in a similar position that he wasn't enthusiastic about it). So they take Blake regardless and then worry about making the rest work later.
It'll be a lot easier to put together a trade to make their pieces fit better once they've got stars like Blake and Horford than it is to find the right star from the jump. They trade for Blake now and if he and Horford don't mesh great you dangle Blake or Horford for another team's star and now you're bargaining with a star for a star, which I think is a better position to be in.
Also with your suggestion I think you have to defer to the desires of the team with the best value piece in trades like this and I think LAC clearly has the best piece in Blake and they want a SF who can be a small-ball PF to pair with DJ and not to replace them. Assuming that'd be the motivation I think you have to start with Blake going out and then work the rest from there.
Totally agree with your assessment.
But if I'm BOS, and I just traded for Griff and in worse case we find out, oh, this isn't a good fit, I'd be pretty depressed as a BOS fan of what surely will be a bounty they give only to have to sell him on the open market for 1/2 or 3/4 or worst worst case, he leaves for nothing cuz that's a possibility.
Yea, DJ isn't "sexy" superstar but for BOS, it fills a need and fit and somewhat of a "marquee" name in some respects AND they could possibly do it without giving up a Bradley/Crowder/IT4 and hold onto 2018 BK pick, 2019 MEM pick or 2019 LAC pick possibly.
Yea, I didn't really look at the BOS picks but sitting with this for a minute, here's what I got peculating:
Sign Jaelyn to his rookie deal for 5ish-mil I believe, so, this deal can't get done in 30 days now
BOS receives DJ
LAC receive Gay + Koufos + BOS sends back Clips 2019 pick and maybe a random 2nd
SAC receives Brown (to replace Gay) + Amir Johnson (salary filler) + Rozier (rumored they like him?) + 2018 BK pick unless SAC REALLY wants 2017 BK swap + random 2nds as filler if need be
Everyone gets their players they want for fit, value, I think works out for those involved AND BOS still retains their picks and that MEM pick.
