I don't know why anyone would be upset with Smitty. How many reports on trades, from how many different media members, have there been about the Celtics only to have those trades not come to fruition? These guys aren't making this stuff up. Someone from within the organization is leaking this stuff - over and over again.

Maybe I missed things that got deleted before I read them but are people actually upset with Smitty? I mean, why? All he did was report what he was hearing. If you took any of that to mean a trade was guaranteed or imminent, the problem is yourself, not Smitty.

Again, no one here on this particular board. But elsewhere, I've gotten a mountain of crap. I can ignore it, but it does get a little old.

Just one example: I've never blocked anyone but spam bots on Twitter. I had to block my first actual person ever yesterday. The guy was brutal.

All I can say is you've got the right attitude about it. Tom Moore, one of the Sixers beat writers, is getting absolutely killed the last week because he posted a story titled: Source: Saric Might Not Come Over This Year. Now, the real problem is that the source was not really providing any inside knowledge of anyone's thinking but just regurgitating everything we've heard for years, i.e., frontcourt logjam/more money by waiting. As everyone now throws Saric's signing in his face, he just calmly explains that he was just reporting what he was told. Moreover, to Tom's credit, he owned up to the fact that the title was a poor choice given the content, which was the real issue in my view.

The thing is, I don't read your posts to be ironclad predictions. Anyone who spends a lot of time reading threads and articles in the off-season or near the trade deadline knows how fluid everything is. I took your words as glimpse into the world of front-office guys. And I appreciate every bit of perspective you give by keeping us up to date. Dunno if tweets are the best way to do it, but certainly don't stop posting those things here. You're among friends.

Taking this out of context and prefacing this all with to being clear that I'm not discussing either of the situations talked about in this thread.

But this is a big problem with a lot of guys that cover stuff. There is in no small amounts of corners a 'I heard it I can run it' attitude, which results in stuff that doesn't pass the 'credible enough to post' muster getting posted because it was someone else who said it, I'm just reporting it.

The information to noise content is always low. Reporting stuff where it is zero just adds to the sound wave clutter. If someone saw Lebron vacationing in LA and asked someone around the league if LAC would do a S&T of Blake for him, thats not a news story. A team without cap space is not offering a 5 year deal to a guy they don't have Bird Rights on, even if an agent says they are.

Newspapers in general have gone from doing articles about what happens, to releasing edited news releases from the people involved in something. When they still have reporters, it is nice when the reporter actually works as a reporter and doesn't just mimic that transition, posting what amounts to pr releases from their various sources.

Edit: and to be clear, Smitty reporting this is the chatter is done in a very different way.

Didn't read the whole thread but I like what Smitty's doing. I'm from Germany so connecting with Players, teams or FO's is impossible (Odell Beckham will visit a Kickz store in Munich on Saturday though), therefore I really Smitty´s trade buzz way more than those fantasy trades...

Btw, what's going on with T-Rob? Any news about him?

is Ty Lawson turning down minimum salary offers, or is nobody even interested? I haven't heard anything.

Oh, thank the heavens. ESPN had him on the Spurs roster during the game yesterday. I was so depressed.

Probably because they hadn't officially renounced his rights yet. With the Pau signing done, his rights and cap hold have been waived. Potentially he could still come back on a min deal, but I'd guess he's still hoping he could get a bit more?

I'm surprised his name hasn't come up with Dallas yet as I know the team has liked him in the past. I guess he's just fallen too far off his game?

I think the Spurs have a slingshot effect. For guys like Murray, their stock goes up because people think the Spurs see something in those guys that other FOs missed. For dudes like Austin Daye, Jimmer and Martin, people look at it like, "If the Spurs can't make you a good player, no one can." That's really unfair (both ways), as I have argued in the past, but I think that's a factor as to why he hasn't gotten much reported interest.

So I gotta vent for a second:

All these dudes are now coming with the Griffin news. I broke that **** almost 4 days ago. I hope they remember who to credit when/if it goes down!

And a blue check would be nice too!

Hey about the terrible people on Twitter, remember that Twitter is full of uneducated losers who think that attacking a person is arguing against something they don't like. It's crazy the amount of trolls on there, and as a high schooler, I sometimes see the worst of Twitter.

You're great Smitty, with your spreadsheets and your rumors, you were right with Golden State being the favorite for KD when no one was really reporting it. You're gonna go far dude! don't let inbreds on Twitter ruin it for you

This is a perfect example of the ridiculousness writers have to take. If you read the piece, he was directly quoting a source who was speculating. That headline was the entire problem and I sincerely doubt he even wrote it. There are lunatics on every side, sadly. Now whether that was worth a mention is a different subject entirely.

Anyway, I do hope you keep up the positive attitude, Smitty. I can only imagine how difficult it is to see when these people are purposely bothering you, but the majority of your Twitter followers and readers are people like myself who are just happy to have another reliable, accessible source of information to check between meetings.

Yeah, fully agree with this. I obviously love to read what Smitty recaps cause I take it with a grain of salt and him just repeating what he's heard around gives some insight into executives' thinking and stuff, without it being necessarily reporting what's going to happen.

But when it comes to reporting itself, the difference between Woj, Shams, Lowe and all the journalists we respect, and the ones we don't, is those guys are very selective in what to report of the things they're hearing, and they thoroughly contrast what they hear with different sources from both sides, etc. until they get a clear picture of what's the actual situation vs what one side tells you about it.

Why? Making deals for stars is very difficult. It's hardly going out on a limb to suggest that Boston doesn't get a deal done.

The Ainge hate is strong here.

What is so difficult to make a trade, Ainge presses a couple of buttons on the console and he is right there! The trade don't work out? Just hit reset. It is not rocket science.
