Fat, I hear you ... but I view it not so much as the team "giving up too soon" as the front office realizing that Biz was a bad fit for what Cliff was trying to do.

As for Wood, I guess it's a good thing that he's not a "raw athletic big man" in the sense that Biz was. Wood has skills that Cliff's system demands (big man perimeter play on both ends). He has baskteball skill now. The issues are maturity, consistent effort, and mental mistakes. Those are things that will potentially get Cliff to bench him. It's going to be up to Wood to come in, give effort, and limit the mistakes. And, even if the worst happens, and he gets no playing time there is always the D-League now. So one way or the other I think that Wood will have a shot at developing.

The bigger issue long term is frankly the length of the contract. 2 year deals actively punish the team signing them if the player does develop well.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

If Wood's biggest problems are maturity as opposed to being raw, we saw how long the front office put up with Hairston and Lance.

I don't want to be the guy in this thread trying to bring everyone down, its just that I do not trust 1) our front office to be patient enough to wait on a guy like Wood 2) our coach to ever give him a chance over the vets on the team.

I don't get the maturity concern - if Wood has maturity problems that he can't get over, I don't mind letting him go and I don't think doing so would reflect poorly on our coaching staff or FO. Trading PJ and Lance was the right move IMO. I don't think you bring in a guy that has chemistry or maturity issues and just ride them out if he won't act in accordance with the culture that you are building.

I agree 100% and our front office does as well. We have been very quick to cut ties with players that have maturity or locker room problems and we go out of our way to stay clear of those types in most cases. My point simply being, if he does have maturity issues, I doubt we're the type of team that will provide endless rope, like some other franchises might.

He hasn't. Nothing against Wood, and he could be quite a good scorer in the league, but Hassan Whiteside averaged some ridiculous stats in the D-League. Wood was about the same in regards to scoring, but his rebounds and blocks were far inferior. Thats not to say Wood is going to be a bad player, but just shows how good Whiteside is.

First year dleague stats compared, Wood's stats are better in every category except blocks....

Even advanced stats favored Wood....for example

WinShare

Wood = first 32 dleague games 3.2 WS (1 season, 19-20 yrs old)

Whiteside = first 64 games 2.8 WS (3 seasons, 21-23 yrs old)

Lot's of good info in this thread, thanks. Dude looks pretty good to me. If he can keep his head on straight and gain about 20 lbs we may just have found a gem in the rough. The Hornets look like they are positioned to be a playoff team for the next couple of years but we will need some young talent in the mix so he better work out.

Sounds like the new Vonleh, that works for me. Looks like he's got a lot of skills, hopefully he hits the gym hard and fits in with the other guys and develops himself into a solid player. We really needed another big man, if he can be a 20yo with range and upside all the better.

I am excited with the signing, seems to be the Vonleh replacement. They are nearly same player at this point, just Wood was a lot less expensive in terms of assets. I am excited about what he can be in a year or two, but honestly I think he will play in Greensboro most of the year. Cliff will want him with the team for the first 20 games or so to learn our system and culture, but after that he should be getting as many minutes as possible in the DLeague.

Same with Harrison. I hope we use our last roster spot on another undrafted guy or a similar situation with Wood. Then we would have those three guys all flexing back and forth to the Dleague throughout the year, maybe just keep 1 of the three on the active roster and rotate the other two to the Swarm. I would look for a true point guard or a defensive wing, will have to look around.

QUICK LIST
Yogi Ferrell
Axel Toupane or Jakarr Sampson if Nuggets cut one of them- currently have 16 on roster.
AJ English- currently with Warriors summer league team, remember somebody liking him a lot during tourney
Michael Carrera- from USC, played with Heat. Havent seen him much but looks like a potential defender.
Jared Uthoff- pretty much Sam Dekkar without athleticism

I think that was me on the AJ English hype train. In fact I believe I was the conductor

My personal list for our last roster spot has expanded to Damien Inglis, Jarrod Uthoff, Jerami Grant, and Jordan Hamilton.

I like Hamilton. Solid vet with shooting and skills.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Axel Toupane is my number one guy... Denver has to cut someone and we might be an ideal destination because of Batum. He has the tools to be a solid 3D guy. Denver will cut one of him, Sampson or Papa Jameer and I am thinking Jameer sticks because they dont have many Vets and Murray and Mudiay are only two points right now.

From ESPN Insider Best of Summer League
Best free agent: Christian Wood | Philadelphia 76ers

Technically, Wood is no longer a free agent, having parlayed his impressive run in both Salt Lake City and Las Vegas into a two-year deal with the Charlotte Hornets.

Between the two leagues, Wood made 69.4 percent of his 2-point attempts, six 3s and got to the free throw line 37 times in six games. Wood is still a ways from harnessing that potential into NBA production, but he's much closer now than a year ago.
