For two top 10 players in the league, you do it every single time. Every single time.

Hard to argue with that, but being blinded by star power is dangerous.

For one thing, '17 may not have a Griffin, but it'll be a Westbrook at worst..

I don't understand that statement because Westbrook is better than Griffin

Westbrook + Blake would put us in the Cleveland / Golden State tier.

Yeah this guts us of all our premium future assets for 2 stars that will be declining in 2 years, rely heavily on their athleticism, and possibly won't be here for more than 1 year. All so we can lose to Golden State in the finals 2 consecutive years (at best). I love Pierce but if he's our starting SF we have no chance of eliminating Lebron or KD in the playoffs. Not to mention the CBA risk that could uncap max salaries and make keeping both beyond 1 year impossible.

Hopefully the specifics of these deals are not legit and the general idea of RW+BG coming in consecutive moves is all that's really solid at this point.

That's fair. You would think with all this smoke there would eventually be fire. I'm sure you've been told rumors before, has there ever been a situation like this where you kept hearing the same information/rumours for something that never ended up happening?

Super interesting stuff Smitty.

No, but I am very new at this. The only two things I was rock solid on that happened were the Durant stuff and the Magic thinking very little of Tobias Harris and regretting the contract they gave him.

Oh and I got the Sullinger stuff first, but that was just a matter of checking the transaction wire before anyone else.

1. Dont worry, I wont share anything on twitter even though Im an outsider here
2. Thank you for sharing all this info, I know you dont benefit in any way from this
3. Do you think its possible that "actual" NBA media knows something about this, but cant share because of their relationships with front offices?
4. Are you hearing anything about what happened with Sacramento, or what is going on with Sixers bigs?

If they both agree to a year extension each, this trade would absolutely 1000% be worth it.

To pair a top five player, with a top ten player, with two top twenty players is insane.

It's literally the same as Golden State, except we'd have the better bench.

Smitty basically said Crowder or Brown would still be here, that would be the starting 3. Plus Westbrook and Blake both have like 5-6 years left in their prime, 4-5 before they start declining at least.

Thomas/Pierce/Bass off the bench + maybe Yabu and whoever else we can scrap out.
Good assessment:

Don't forget the bench of ex-Celtics: Pierce, Bass, Semih Erden, and maybe Ray Allen.

Smitty731 wrote:Ok. I am prefacing this with 2 things:

1. Do not overreact and go crazy, because this is all very loose.

2. Because it is very loose, I can not post it on Twitter. Plus, that didn't go great for me last time so....

Two of my sources have confirmed different parts of this and I am putting it together. And a third added a little credence as well. Here goes...

The Celtics are trying to go big. They want both Griffin and Westbrook. They would rather do it with agreements to stay in Boston but are willing to do it without those guarantees. So here is what the basic pieces in and out would be:

Boston gets: Blake Griffin, Paul Pierce and Russell Westbrook.

Boston gives to LAC: Amir Johnson, Tyler Zeller (S&T for 1 guaranteed year at around ~$6.5 million, just enough for salary matching) and 1 BRK pick + another first rounder (LAC pick back maybe?) and/or Jaylen Brown.

Boston gives to OKC: Marcus Smart, Jonas Jerebko, R.J. Hunter, Jordan Mickey, James Young + 1 BRK pick + another 1st Rounder or two (future BOS 1st and/or MEM 1st).

If LAC would rather, Boston will give up Crowder, but would prefer not to.

And they would then fill out their bench with veteran FAs. If Crowder goes in the LAC deal (which would also remove Zeller but include Holland), then Brown stays and Pierce starts with Brown backing him up. The Celtics like the idea of splitting Thomas and Westbrook to start games, but they would play plenty together.

Putting it all together:

We know the Griffin/Westbrook parts. The interesting part I got today from a different source was many of the veteran FAs who remain unsigned are waiting because their agents believe this is happening and they want to be the guys to fill out the Boston roster. Think some familiar names. Maybe some guys who recently wore the green.

Getting Griffin and Westbrook and the Return of The Truth, while not losing I.T,Jae or even Bradley...this is all too immense to happen, but damn I hope this goes through...

Agreed. There's no need to worry about assets and young prospects when you can make a deal to become an instant contender. You win titles with stars. This deal puts us in strong contention to make the finals. Why wait 3-4 years for that when we don't have to.

Blake/Horford/vets vs Thompson/Love I like Cleveland, but this finals may have been Lebron's last gasp of youth. Puncher's chance.

No idea how GS will do with no Bogut types in the middle..

If we're completely emptying our pockets for at least two years of these dudes, also have to think about Detroit, LA next year, this year if they turn around and move the BKN pick and expirings for Carmelo.. Utah has Gobert and Favors. Helps to have a couple of pieces to make moves later.

Obviously not a Celtics fan, but this is one of my favorite threads to read. Thanks for the updates Smitty, it helps keep the offseason interesting even for a 76ers fan! And best of luck to the rest of you in landing 1-2 of these superstars to complement your team. I've been waiting for another team in the East to have a real chance at beating Lebron for years (let's be honest, it's not beating the Cavs, it's beating whatever team Lebron is on).

One other thing that I've found very odd/interesting is why Vegas has the Celtics with the 4th best odds to win the title. If you just look at rosters today I think it's a stretch to say we have the 4th best chance to win the title.

Vegas can't afford to be dumb and has set these odds for a reason, and that has made me suspect something will happen for a little while now.

Or the OKC tier? The LAC tier? Both guys will have a supporting cast better than they had there, but you don't know until they get on the floor. Reason to hold out on some of BKN/Jaylen/Smart.

Will be interesting.

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but can anyone explain why LAC would do this deal? They have zero reason to consider it w/o a star coming back.
