Mario Hezonja vs Alex Abrines

Post#1 » by Furinkazan » Tue Jul 19, 2016 8:12 am

They seem very similiar.Seems Abrines played a bit more in Barcelona
still Mario was 5th pick in 2015 vs Abrines 32th pick in 2013 for OKC.

Does Mario got a higher Ceiling or taking him at 5th was a reach?

Mario Hezonja
Position: F ▪ Height: 6-6 ▪ Weight: 214 lbs.
Born: February 25, 1995

Alex Abrines
Position: F ▪ Height: 6-6 ▪ Weight: 190 lbs.
Born: August 1, 1993

what do you think?
Do you expect them to have similiar nba careers? or Mario will jump to another level ?
why such disproportions in terms of 32th vs 5th? especially if 2013 was such a weak draft? Why Abrines didnt go higher?or why Mario was drafted so high?

except Mario is 6'8 now. not unheard of to grow a few inches at his age.

and hype helps sell a player. I hard heard of Mario coming into the draft, i had never heard of Abrines before a WT headline the other day

Man, Abrines is a scrub, he wasn't even good in Europe, his biggest selling point is his shot and he's streaky shooter at best. Its baffling he got that almost 18 millions per 3 years while some other NBA players got less even with this cap.OKC wing rotation is gonna be cringeworthy wih Singler/Abrines/Roberson and Morrow.Oladipo is only starting level guy among those.

Just checked his video to get a sense of him. The only thing they commented on was his scoring and intangibles.

You add playmaking ability, above average athleticism, defensive potential, overall potential and 2 inches... you have a totally different player in my opinion. And that's where the gap begins to separate the 2.

First Hezonja is 6'8 now, year and half younger so he should have more potential.

Abrines is solid but nothing special, not really athletic for NBA. Solid shooter, but nothing special. I mean Spainih teams love to play their home grown talents, and yet he didn't get that much playing time really.

Presti lost his mind when Durant left, it's official.

Thne potential was much higher with Hezonja. The time they got isn't that much of an indicator as they too go for experience rather then potential over there so Albrines was probably the wiser choice for them. But Hezonja is bigger now and he has far more potential then Albrines. Albrines had potential as a sleeper but still Hezonja was the right pick as his potential has a much higher ceiling and a higher floor.

Hezonja is 2 years younger, and seems to have a better ability to create shots for himself and his teammates.

Abrines reminds me of Rudy Fernandez.

Other than his potential and more talent, let's mention he's now coming over 3 years later. No team (other than the Sixers) will draft a guy in the lottery that won't be over immediately. Pick 32 is a typical stash pick.

We assumed Fran would come over that's why we drafted him.

He was drafted at 6'8".... and some people are suspecting he might be taller when compared to other players he has been seen standing by. So yeah... he's got elite size for a shooting guard and great size for a small forward.

Hezonja is the same height at Aaron Gordon. Either Gordon is 6'8 or Hezonja is 6'9 now. I lean on the latter.

Hezonja is 2 years younger, but Abrines was drafted 2 years earlier. I think his point was that they were the same age when they were drafted, had similar metrics, similar experience, etc. So why was Abrines drafted in the 2nd round while Mario went 5th overall?

One could point to the eye test, intangibles, other skill sets, better workouts, etc. But I can see why the question comes up. A lot of time it comes down to hype, reputation, etc. Same for all players though, not just Euros. You look at the draft and you'll see a guy like Thon Maker go #10, and then you'll see Skal slip into the late 1st round. Why? They're about the same age, similar metrics, etc. Sometimes it's just a hype train gets on a roll, or some small nagging issue bothers people and rubs GMs the wrong way and you fall.

Should Hezonja have gone as high as he did? Maybe, we'll know in a few years if it was a reach or not.

Mario will come around, and yeah he's definitely not 6'8 anymore. Quite a few pictures of him + AG standing togethor and it's pretty clear they're identical in height.

Pretty hilarious how Elfs hair makes him almost as tall as Mario + AG (He hardly reaches their noses if you follow the top of his head, not hair).

I think abrines being drafted so late also had to do with signability/him coming over. I know even last year people were saying he would probably never come over and if he did, it wouldnt be for a while (he signed a long term deal last year overseas)

Not saying he would of went top 5, but im sure he would of went higher than 2nd round
