I think their respective values on RealGM differ than that of ReallifeGM. I think Monroe got WAY too much of the blame around the demise of our defense ( I mean he was exactly the player we thought we were getting and we didn't adjust our scheme at all, plus Jabari playing the 4 was an awful pairing ). I think MCW also takes way too much heat for a couple of reasons, he was a poster boy for meaningless stats win you ROY, he doesn't have good PG skills (he is more in the Monta Ellis mold), and using logic you could surmise that the Bucks could have had the Lakers 1st round draft pick and instead choose MCW over that, and as such he became the realGM punching bag.
Both characters are also leading up to, or in the early stages of their physical primes.
So I think "popular" opinion varies from real life opinion. I think there is a strong case both have fair value.
Follow up questions:
1. Do you believe the rumors the Bucks are shopping Monroe?
2. Does the Plumlee contract have any effect on question 1?
3. If they are shopping him do you think a deal hasn't been done because no one has yet offered the value you believe he is worth or because they have multiple good offers and feel like they can play bidders against each other to get more?
4. I'm guessing you believe he will opt out based on your valuation. Do you think his PO is hurting his trade value?
1. Yes. We had heard from some insiders that we had a trade deadline deal lined up with the Pelicans which the owners nixed. I think it was absolutely the right move to sign him at the time, because we were in talent acquisition mode, we had not yet identified our core, and it was a great PR thing for the team. I think since we have signed him, we realize he doesn't fit our scheme, and
more notably, he doesn't pair well with Jabari in particular on the court. It's pretty clear that if you are choosing between the two, it's Jabari all day long.
2. Yes. I would have traded Monroe based on the underlined portion of answer 1. Plumlee got that contract because he pairs really well with Giannis, Parker and Middleton. A low usage, big, athletic dummy, who excels in the PnR and dunks like a giant gorilla. So we end up paying him like a starter to keep him around (or offseason will forever be dubbed, 2016 Milwaukee Bucks #fitthefuture)
3. I don't know...I'm not suggesting there are ton of suitors on the market. I think that dried up as some of the crazy contracts were handed out to less than role player guys. I would guess they have a couple of neutral deals lined up with other teams in the same position. Think guys like Tyreke, cap space, Lamb/Hawes, maybe Danny Green if there is any basis for the spurs talk. Might be deciding between taking on salary, trying to keep the cap flexible or just keep him and ride it out for what will likely be an awkward year at the center position (because I don't think they just paid Plum that contract to come off the bench).
4. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...One team looking to make a splash in FA might be happy about the opt out, one team may want him committed for two years, one team may not care either way.
