Jayson Williams Tells Crazy Stories About the NBA in the 90's

Post#1 » by ItsThatEasy » Wed Jul 20, 2016 3:12 pm

I have a soft spot for Jayson Williams; he seems like a genuinely nice and friendly guy who made a horrible mistake that he admits still haunts him to this day.

He recently joined VICE Sports podcast and had some pretty interesting stories about the league back in the day.

Here's a few paraphrased by Complex, with a link to the full podcast:

http://www.complex.com/sports/2016/07/former-nba-all-star-jayson-williams-90s-nba-drinking-culture-stories

On Manute Bol
His rookie year during the 1990-91 season about the tallest—and arguably the skinniest—man in NBA history and former 7-foot-7 Sixers teammate Manute Bol "never played sober in one basketball game during his NBA career" because the team wanted him to gain weight, the weird self-mutilation tactics he used to keep track of his own age, and scolding reporters to stop looking at his exposed manhood in the team's locker room.

On Michael Jordan
How NBA players were scared stiff of Michael Jordan, knowing he was the best player that helped bring big contracts to the league, and that he traveled with his own private jet full of his entourage of bar-loitering street goons that trailed the Bulls' team plane to away games.

On Charles Barkley
Former Sixers teammate Charles Barkley being the laziest teammate imaginable who was always late to practice and rode an exercise bike while watching and screaming obscenities at his teammates.

On Drinking During Away Games
The funny reflection on how several away games for the 1992-93 Nets squad—which he considers the best Nets team in franchise history, better than the Jason Kidd-led ones that went to consecutive NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003—were lost because the team was too drunk from partying the night before, similar to the Warriors when they lost to the lowly Lakers last season.

Barkley was a James Harden type defender..He had ability, he just didn't care.. at all..

I find it pathetic how on TNT he's goes on and on about what kind of defense it takes to compete for championships.

Article is kinda confusing.

Manute Bol never played a game sober because the team wanted him to gain weight - how do these two facts correlate? Was he so angst about trying to gain weight that he drank too much?

Players were scared of MJ because he helped bring big contracts to the league? Huh?

It also mentions he says today's game has lack of pride in team ball and too much individualism, which is actually totally opposite. Today's game is far more team oriented than 90s ball which was criticized for being to one-on-one.

Either badly written article or Jayson Williams still kinda drunk.

He's made more than a couple bad decisions.

I also found that little tidbit odd, as I hadn't heard anything about it. The sentence links to another complex article about the loss, but it doesn't mention hangovers at all.

That makes some sense. There was some SERIOUS talent on that Nets squad but they were only meh. Coleman, Anderson, Petrovic, Chris Morris... coached by Chuck Daly. But a lot of guys that didn't take their talent seriously.

TBH, they always seemed a little drunk.

This guy tried to cover up the fact he shot and killed his driver. This guy has no credibility.

Beyond that, the Bol part makes no sense whatsoever. Williams is such a hot mess.

If you listen he spends most of the time trying to be funny about everything, it rarely works but that's why the paraphrasing is confusing.

Schintzius told investigators the incident began when he bet Williams $100 that he could drag Zeus out of the house, despite the animal's supposed ability to respond to attack commands given in German. Assistant prosecutor Katharine Errickson said that after Schintzius, who has played for the Nets, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers and Boston Celtics, dragged the dog outside by its hind legs, he demanded his payoff. Schintzius said he assumed Williams went upstairs to get the $100. Instead, Williams, 35, returned with a double-barreled shotgun, firing one round into the dog's side, then another directly into the dog's head. Schintzius went on to tell investigators that after Williams reloaded and threatened him, he and another houseguest, Chris Duckery, who had been with the ex-teammates all evening, buried Zeus in the rear of the expansive Williams estate.

Jayson Williams was total trainwreck.

He's not your "at the end of the day he's a nice guy" Stephon Marbury type of dude, clearly far from that.

Maybe because i'm not really a drinker myself so I never really understand why some athletes like to drink before or during games. I can understand people doing coke to increase you alertness or getting high to manage stress, but why alcohol?
