If he can make the gimmie dunks (that this team should be able to generate for him) that would be SPLENDID

But in context of our team, which had the worst FG% near the rim by a massive margin even compared to the 29th worst team, he's looks like Shaq.
Our scoring big man Pau shot 56% at the rim.
Our other center Noah, shot 43%.
Our reserve center when both were hurt, Bairstow, who actually started games for us, shot 27%.
Lopez shot 62% last year, and that was a low year for him in FG%. In previous years he's shot 65%, 66%, and 69%.
But for most teams, bigs are supposed to shoot high %s near the rim. It shouldn't be some special rare skill. Andrew Bogut is basically a defensive specialist but he also shoots 65% near the rim.
Lopez is not especially talented as a scorer, but being just a normal NBA center in finishing capability makes him a huge upgrade over what we had.
Good post.
I'll make a side point pertaining to the Bulls guards. Pau the year before he came here finished at 67% around the rim, but fell to 61% the first year with the Bulls.
Argument could be that our guards didn't do the best job of setting up our centers for easier buckets. It will be interesting to see what Rondo and Wade are able to do in that regards.

Re: Is R.Lopez Underated Offensively?
Based on the data from this past season, I'd have to say that Lopez is a definite upgrade, all the rah-rah sh*t aside. As far as the all of the "heart and soul of the team" and "locker room leader" stuff goes, was he still? Or was he on one side of an obvious divide? Besides his abysmal performances last season, I'm not so sure that everyone on this team now would be considering him as their leader anyway now.
And yeah, I get it, Noah was all kind of injured last season. But, like Rose, I'm not buying that either one of them are going to flip some kind of switch and become some vintage version of themselves. They are what they are, and nobody knows what they are better than those of us who have watched all their games since both of their arrivals through their recent departures.
I'm guessing that Lopez will have a better season than Noah this season as well, with more PPG, BPG and RPG - In RPG, I do anticipate Noah having plenty of rebounding opportunities, with the # of missed shots that there's gonna be from this NY team.
I'm also pretty sure that Lopez will have more dunks too. But, Noah will definitely lead in HCPG (Hand-Claps Per Game) There was a lot of recent talk centered around Noah's shoulder injury being rehabbed, however it's his knee and the resulting diminished physical aspects of his game due to it, that I'm much more wary of.
I'd have to bet on Lopez right now. Noah is damaged goods and can go down at any moment with more knee problems. Lopez is 28 and in his prime right now, healthy, and doesn't seem to bring much in the way baggage either, unless you include his dislike of mascots.

Re: Is R.Lopez Underated Offensively?
wouldn't say his offense is underrated more so.. surprising. He showed us more than what he advertised in Portland, the situations were different though he wasn't asked to do certain things he showed while playing on the knicks vs when he played on the blazers because the different systems. He has a little post hook game even though it looks ugly and slow. He can hit the mid range shot sometimes. He is not a go to option or anything in that nature and should never be used as so. On the Bulls he will probably used the same way he was used in portland cleaning up boards & Hard screens. You guys will like him though he plays hard and with alot of effort and hustle anything he gives you offensively is a bonus

Lopez has a great low post game, occasionally he can hit an open shot. Also an above average FT shooter.

Any advantage he has on Jo's offensive game is miniscule. Before the knee injuries, Noah was clealry the better offensive player. Anybody think we'd win games running the offense through Robin Lopez?
Winning games with Noah as the point center was vastly overrated and immediately exposed as a gimmick come playoff time. Lopez just need to connect on dunks, layups and wide open close jumpers all of which Noah is the worst starting Center in the league at doing. As the 5th option he simply needs to justify a defender so the team isn't playing 4 on 5 like the last couple years with Noah.

I would like him to rebound better. But offense ... yeah I like.
That's where I think this team fits better than most people exact. Lopez and Taj for that matter aren't volume rebounders but the team has excellent rebounding wings/guards in Butler/Wade/Rondo/Valentine so as long as they box out and compete for their share I think rebounding will be OK.
Last two years the team had "easy rebound" Pau gobbling up the gimmes and MDJ/Rose as essentially non-rebounders at their position. I don't think I ever saw the two of them go for contested rebounds. Rebounding has been a problem ever since Boozer left and Noah fell off a cliff.

If you think that passing the ball to him is a waste of time and effort, yes, you're underrating him. If you expect him to be anything other than the 5th offensive option on the starting 5, you're overrating him.
Until the actual truth is more important to you than what you believe, you will never recognize the truth.

Why not just start Niko at C? Roll out a Rondo/Wade/Jimmy/Dougie/Niko starting lineup. We'll have more space in the starting unit and more defense with the bench.

Or lets just roll with Valentine/McDermott/Niko/Portis and let Jimmy and Snell have a 3pt contest shootout for the last spot...

I'm down. I think the minutes that the bench unit gets this year will be far more exciting to watch anyway.

..."before" the knee injuries?
So, you are comparing a guy that no longer exists to a current player's abilities? OK.
Maybe compare 2010 Rose to Rondo today while you're at it.

Kind of. He's always been compared to his brother, so he's a better defensive player than his brother and worse offensive player, but he's not like Ben Wallace. He's fairly balanced.

Hard to get gimmie dunks when the other team is playing a 2-3 zone and packing the paint.

Maybe I got the title wrong. He might be underrated "Defensively"...

Here's the think about Lopez:
He's not the outside shooter that Pau is.
He's not the perimeter defender that Noah is.
He's not the distributor that either guy is.
He's just really good at the stuff we need from the center position. He is a very effective 5th option scorer. He is a very good rim defender. He is really good at setting picks, rebounding, and defending the bigger C's in the league.
And then there's his hair!
