I like this signing. He's probably coming in to compete with Lorenzo Brown for the 3rd point guard spot. I wonder if his deal is guaranteed 'cause we have 16 guys right now.

He could. I give it a 0-5% chance of happening though.

So is Lorenzo Brown cut now to give him a chance to catch on elsewhere? We're at 16 contracts, 15 guaranteed and don't see anybody else remotely jettisoned. I thought he played well enough to earn the 3rd string spot to be honest.

not sure i see what others see in ray mccallum... he's been in and out of the D league, got cut last year and then could only manage a couple 10-day contracts.

don't see how he's better than any other 3rd string PG, but we did need one.

I had a feeling this would happen since the spurs released him last year. I think he is a better 3rd pgs than Brown, perfect spot for him, he is above average defensively.

I like this. I think he is a better player than Brown at the moment, has more potential, and he's a hometown kid, so the fans will love him.

Compared to Steve Blake as our backup PG at the end of last season, we have made huge upgrades!

I'm not seeing anything about this deal aside from it being for the minimum over one year. Might still be unguaranteed and the Pistons could have McCallum and Brown battle it out for the last roster spot during training camp.

Kind of underwhelming with Cole and Larkin still out there, but on the other hand neither of those guys probably want to settle for third-string duties at this point. And make no mistake that's all McCallum would be doing if he beats out Brown. No chance he usurps the backup role from Smith even though the latter isn't great either.

I really hope this is just a camp contract. I don't mind it if its not. Ray or Lorenzo or other are just going to be 3rd stringers. If its only Ray or Lorenzo, i'm guessing the loser will be offered a gig with Grand Rapids.

Also, if this a camp and stash contract for Ray. I think they should do the same with Branden Dawson and Johnny O'Bryant III (or Greg Smith).

If McCallum's deal is unguaranteed, and I bet it is, he will practically have the exact contract as Brown. Both have three years of NBA experience so their slotting is the same. Seems like the Pistons know how much they want to pay their third point guard, now it's just a matter of choosing which one.

Seems like this move wraps up their summer though. I doubt a third guy is brought in to compete for the third point guard role and there are no open slots/guys who might not make the team at any other position.

We'll probably sign some camp fodder guys, but I can't see them going after anything more then that.
