Great read. Each day I'm even happier with the Dudley signing. I think he is going to be a huge positive force for the franchise again and it's great to have someone that legitimately wants to be here with us and understands the situation.

Reading that also took me back. I still believe there is a piece of myself down in my basement still lying face down on the floor after that Ron Artest put back in 2010. I don't think I'll ever truly be whole again.

Interesting. He didn't say any bad words for the franchise.

Zelaznyrules wrote:My favorite Amare memory came about in preseason of his rookie year. He caught the ball just inside the free throw line with his body facing the sideline. I remember wondering what he was going to do there because he had no jumper at the time and no left handed hook shot either as far as I knew. Anyway, he then went up in the air and proceeded to try and dunk the ball. He missed, the ball just clipped the inside of the rim and went sailing. But still, the audaciousness to try a stand still dunk from just inside the free throw line simply floored me. I've never seen anyone else try it before or since.

This is why Amare was probably the most exciting young player I have ever seen on the Suns. Just for the fact that when he was a rookie, you had no idea what he was capable of doing, and some of the things he did were mind boggling. Most of my favorite memories of Amare are from games I attended.

One game that specifically comes to my mind was the first time I saw Amare in person during his rookie year. It was against the Nets in Phoenix and it was a really animated crowd. Amare had a huge two handed monster dunk and everyone went crazy. I remember looking at the Nets players standing around and they could not believe it. Everyone was in awe at the sheer power of the dunk. The Suns ended up winning the game and it was awesome. After that, each time I went to a game and Amare played, it seemed like he did something special every time.

Good question!

I have a bunch of good memories of Amare the first one I thought of when I read the question was the 3-pointer off the glass to tie the score against the Spurs in the playoffs with less then 10 seconds left and forced overtime in 03. One of my top 10 most exciting moments watching a Suns game. Not a dunk and prob pretty lucky but still a great moment!

Seeing as Amar'e's jersey # has already been worn since he left, I'd say no to his jersey being retired. I also think, if the #1 is to be retired, that player better be absolute gold.
Great as he was, I don't think he was good enough to warrant it.

Marion is a bit tougher to read. I forget if someone wore 31 since he left but I wouldn't be opposed to retiring it.

Both should be in the Ring of Honor though.

Amare and Marion both deserve to have their jerseys retired. We drafted both of them and both of them had very successful years here. They both were huge parts of SSOL.

Regarding Marion:
It's a shame the Marion got butt hurt about the attention Amare and Nash were getting and felt left out and disrespected. Or at least, that was always the rumor. I'm not sure that is 100% accurate though as Marion really seemed to give it his all every single night. I mean the guy really played his ass off. I still think he is underrated. In his prime, he was the most versatile player in the league. I remember him giving Dirk and Kobe all kinds of trouble when no one else could. I remember him grabbing 22 rebounds and scoring 36 points in one game. I also ran into him around town on a few occasions and he always seemed like a fun/happy/friendly dude. A bunch of my friends ran into him around town as well and always had positive stories. He'd either joke around with fans or even buy them a round of drinks. Marion was a great player and sure seemed like a great person.

Regarding Amare:
Prior to his microfracture surgery and first max contact, Amare was a dominant force in the paint and scored most of his points off of attacking the rim. He also showed potential to be an elite defender and rebounder. After his first max contact and microfracture surgery, he was never the same. He didn't seem to give as much effort on defense, often didn't even box out, and his offensive game (while still impressive numbers wise) changed as he didn't attack the rim as much and scored more by hitting 15-17" jumpers. Some might argue that the ability to "pick and pop" instead of "pick and attack" was a needed evolution of his game as he picked up less offensive fouls. However, I think his effectiveness really went down when the bulk of his points started coming from jumpers instead of dunks. Frankly, after his first knee surgery and big deal, Amare still found a way to put up the numbers but didn't put forth max effort. Additionally, as discussed here multiple times, Amare was a prick. Selfish, egotistical, and arrogant. Amare only cares about Amare. Again, I ran into him on multiple occasions and never came away with a good impression. I also heard stories from others in AZ about the DIVA behavior of Amare. Sure he never got caught drinking and driving (Tucker/Richardson), beating his wife (Kidd/Penny), or doing lines of coke in Scottsdale (Beasley/Dumas), so the Suns statement about him "handling himself with class" is partially accurate, but he sure was no Marion or Nash off the court either.

So in summary, Nash/Amare/Marion all deserve a jersey in the rafters for their play.

But Nash (and maybe Marion) is the only guy I wish ended on better terms with Phoenix and I'd still love to have him here as a coach if Watson doesn't work out. Nash is just such a natural/skilled leader.

My memory of STAT was the dunk on Tolliver in GS. I was in Austin, TX for training at the time and was at my hotel room at night.

Watching the game and just doing some research/review -- fast break > dunked on him. I promise you, all the documentation I had laying around my bed just went up in the air. Thankfully my laptop didn't break because I never jumped up that quickly from laying in bed to standing up screaming. I'm sure the room next door to me at the W thought I was crazy.

Very disappointed we didn't bring back Amare for one last year. I understand that people are still salty about how he left us, but he would have been a great resource for Chriss as he learns how to harness his athleticism which is very similar to Amare's (wing-like hops and speed in a 6-9/6-10 frame). Amare put in serious work to get himself to where he was, and I would want Chriss to learn about that.

Except the wine baths, that was just weird...

Doesn't the Ring of Honor and jersey retirement go hand in hand? I think Nash, STAT, and Marion will all be int he Ring of Honor so their numbers will be retired.
SHAZAM!

Suns traded Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder and 4 1st round picks and a swap so some Vegas Bookies would like us.

Suns put so many players in the ring of honor.. No to Amare and Marion. That means you have to put D'Antoni in too if you put them.

Save the room for Booker, Chriss and Ulis when they bring us a championship. Jk

IMO, chances are that would end bitterly (like Hornacek). Even Pop was super close to being fired in his first few seasons as a head coach for the Spurs.

You started this exact same thread last night, and we are all already discussing Amare in the offseason thread, so I merged it with that one. I will merge this one too, but don't start another one. Respond in that thread please, which is now THIS thread.

I've had interactions with Amare on several occasions at my last job and that has a major effect on my thoughts on him having his jersey retired with the Suns.

He deserves nothing from us and I think he's a terrible person. He was nothing without Nash.

I'm posting this just because it's out there and it has been floating around. I do not give this much credibility other than the merit it would be intresting to see a pure passing point at the helm. Booker will be taking a lot of shots and Chriss looks like he's on springs. Now Rubio has missed the same about of time with injuries as Bledsoe.

http://www.sportsrageous.com/nba/nba-rumors-minnesota-timberwolves-trading-ricky-rubio-eric-bledsoe-suns-need-pass-first-pg/37495/

Just for fun the Suns beloved point guards compared to the Rubix Cube

I did not realize how atrocious of a shooter Ricky is I don't know if that shot can be fixed.

Haha.... In his early yrs, one of the posters at azcentral ( I think) lived in the same condos.... He caught Amare continuously lifting his morning newspaper :clown:

Stat tho, was the dunkmiester. In yr two I believe, the NBA kept a dunk meter going between he and shaq.

Good times long gone

Favorite amare memory is the adonal foyle dunk. That game was amazing from him. Doyle gave up his body to science, the amare stoudemire foundation.

I joined this board after Amare's rookie year because I got tired of reading bulls and wiz fans saying curry, Tyson, and kwame were/would be better. We had a much smaller online following back then on this board so I didn't have a lot of backing.

Would jersey retirement means Booker won't be able to wear "1" anymore? Or jersey retirement and number retirement are two different things?

It would mean Booker would have to change numbers.

My best memory of him was the day he inked his talents w/ the Knickerbockers so HIS needs could be attended and so the franchise got rid of a dude that thought that HE deserved max money when, unfortunately, he was not the same one that he was before the injury.
So that day we got the salary space and the spot on the roster to get another player, a thing that we never achived.

Getting him back for a farewell tour while he talks to our young guys would be one of the worst decisions ever.

He will be ok in Jerusalem thinking he is the second anveniment of Jesus while playing some ball and getting bows from people all the time. As he thinks he is a semi-God, he will be in the perfect place.
