Maybe if they add Scherzer, we think about it.

We will include Dickey and Thole if they include Giolito.

So Strasburg, Harper, Scherzer and Giolito for Bautista, Dickey and Thole.

Looks like a balanced trade to me.

I don't see a trade of a current roster player, but on the compensation issue, the Jays will have to offer a qualifying offer of over $16m to all three guys, i.e. $49m in all, and where the comp picks might fall, and I wonder if the management wants to expose itself to at least the theoretical possibility of having to pay out all that money. Prudent risk management would be to at least consider unsolicited offers.

Wouldn't the Jays take a 1year QO on Saunders, EE and Jose and run like a bandit?

I would. Plus could you imagine the backlash if no QO was tendered? No signing and no comp pick (if CBA remains similar).

0%?

Its got to be at least 0.1% chance.

Turner and Giolito for Bautista and Urena.

Fair?

Let's get this done already.

Only downside I see to dealing a star away while we are in contention is the memory of the Powerhouse Oakland Athletics just a few seasons ago. They were the best team in the AL when Beane blew it up at the deadline. Especially the Cespedes trade. A wasted season.

Could Jays end the same way after trading Bautista?

Well, chemistry shouldn't matter in baseball the way it appears to in, say, basketball. But the A's example was pretty scary. I would think it's especially dicey if you're trading a long standing core player, like Bautista. It would be comparable to the conference-leading Pacers trading Granger at the deadline a few years back, and then going into a tailspin from which they've never recovered.

Except Granger wasn't a really productive player at that point. Bautista still is. So it would be even worse. You'd never get an equal or better value in return.

In ~300 plate appearances this year, Bautista is a 0.4 WAR player. His awful defense is almost entirely offsetting his still decent offense.

He's really hurting his value, and making the Jays' decision much easier.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

That's said with the understanding that Jose has much more potential to close the year as a productive player and integral part of a playoff run team. By the time Granger was traded he was a bit part player and didn't look like he could be more than that.

My hope is that Jose sees a lot of the DH role and gets to a point where he can focus on hitting and return to the guy he was in year's prior. That's a lot more realistic than where Granger was at that point in his career.
