Olivera has negative value. Kemp makes more money but is signed in for a couple years less and would at least be the best power bat in the lineup. I would be ecstatic if Coppy pulled that off.

Braves have acquired Matt Kemp for Hector Olivera,

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/atlanta-braves

Kemp is batting .262/.285/.489/.774 23 HRs 69 RBI 16 BB 100 K

Pads will apparently waive Olivera, made the move to get rid of that contract and open a spot for OF prospect Hunter Renfroe.

This trade makes me very happy.
I've always liked Matt Kemp. I realize his great days are probably behind him but he'll still fulfill many needs for us and just having a name will be nice going forward.

The Braves have acquired outfielder Matt Kemp from the Padres in exchange for Hector Olivera.

This appears to be a money move by both teams hoping to clear some expensive contracts from their books.

Olivera is signed through 2020, and is set to make $62.5 million over the length of his contract, which began in 2015. Kemp, on the other hand, is also signed through 2020 and makes roughly $20 million per year.

If we can bring BMac back from the Yankees, without costing us a lot, we could make a late season push. Worst to 1st :P

All jokes aside, how do you honestly feel about bringing him back?

Kemp is instantly our cleanup hitter now. For all of his deficiencies in the field and low walk rate, this is a guy who has the most power on our team and who kills lefties (.333 vs. LHP).

The fact that we get him for the albatross that is Olivera, and we get some $$$ makes me thrilled.

With Olivera being shed and the money we get from SD, we end up paying $8.5 mil extra for Kemp. Not bad for someone who's gonna lead the team in home runs.

While watching the game tonight Sid Bream, John Smoltz, and others mentioned that our team needs veteran leadership. All of them basically went on to say how most MLB teams lack it during the present time.
Kemp can provide us with that. I just hope he does and is beneficial to us in the clubhouse.

I'd take him, if it didn't cost us too much. I'd like to see him retire a Brave.

Just getting Olivera out of the organization is a big relief, and paying a net of 8.5 mil a year isn't bad at all. Interesting that the Dodgers will be paying a portion of both Kemp's and Olivera's contracts. There's a great video of Kemp giving most of the uniform he was wearing to a kid with cancer during a game, so I think it's safe to say we got an upgrade in character. And while he's got some obvious negatives on the field, dude has 23 homers and 24 doubles. On 7/22, he pretty much single-handedly beat the Nats with 2 2-run homers in a 5-3 game. We finally have a cleanup hitter to give some protection to Freeman. And he gives us a veteran OFer so we don't have to rush a guy like Dustin Peterson to the bigs. Now, let's see if we can trade Markakis.

Forward Kemp back to the Dodgers for Puig? Apparently, the Dodgers are still trying to trade Puig - per mlbtraderumors.com.
