Didn't want to start a new thread on this, but needed to say it...

Those of you that pay attention to my posts know I'm something of a snob when it comes to intellect. I listen to players' interviews and form impressions I probably shouldn't. I get on Andre for being a kid (which he is). I love Stanley for being smart and mature. I wish KCP was more talkative. I admired Sheed's intelligence, even if he tried to hide it. I was confused that Ben Wallace always sounded so simple, but played so smart.

Anyway, I have a new observation in this area, and most people aren't going to like it. It worries me.

Henry Ellenson comes off as REALLY stupid. I know he's just a kid, but yikes.

Sorry, just needed to say it.

Always thought KCP was kind of unintelligent in that way. But then I realized he just doesn't talk well and has a stutter which is understandable.

But yeah, Ellenson sounds even worse than KCP ever did. He almost sounds like he's eloquent but then he says the most simplest words like a child would.

I can't lie, I got the same vibe.
I'll put it down to being a 19 year old that could be nervous, but he does come across as a bit of a goof. Hopefully we're just reading into it too much.

I love doing that too. You can read people (for the most part) from how they talk. Do you have any vids? I haven't heard the kid speak yet.

On a side note the interview I seen with kris Dunn is why I think he'll be great. I hope his name is kris

In some psych class I took once upon a time, we learned about what the tempo of your speech can mean about you, the speaker. People who speak more slowly can come across as more confident, calmer, because their words are more measured, carrying more weight, perhaps more authoritative. People who speak quickly may seem less confident, because they're trying to fit a lot of words in while they have your attention, which they may deem to be fleeting. We associate rapid speech with ditzy vapid girls that talk a lot, but don't say anything at all.
The problem is speaking slowly when you're unintelligent, when your words don't carry weight, when you're speaking at a lower level. Some of the smartest people I know DO speak quickly, and they use high caliber words, and it's because they do have a lot to say.

This guy speaks quickly, but he's one of the more brilliant people the world has to offer, and it's so, so evident.

There are fine lines. Henry Ellenson is young, but he doesn't seem very complex with his speech. Maybe his father, friends, family, or other role models/influences speak slowly. I'd expect there's some correlation between faster rates of speech in urban areas than in rural areas, maybe Ellenson is a small town fella. Maybe he's just not that excitable.

At the same time, Jason Kidd never really impressed me vocally, but his basketball IQ showed as a player and again as a coach. Let's hope that this is the case with Ellenson.

Yeah maybe its a accent or something he is from Rice Lake Wisconsin. I worked with a lady from Wisconsin and she had a really weird and annoying voice.

I don't get the vibe that Ellenson is dumb. I think it's the accent to be honest that makes him sound a bit off.

Hey, I hope he's just small-town simple. That's cool. Larry Bird was small-town simple.

Not the vibe I get, though.

In this clip he sounds like a young kid that is unsure of himself. Damn he has some good looking potential from that little clip tho. If his shot becomes silky smooth watch out

All I really care about is his BB IQ, which a number of his scouting reports indicate is high. Welcome to Bushwood!

The problem with Ellenson is, he doesn't sound like he's breathing in between words. The words he speaks just spill out having a weird tempo/rhythm in between them.

Either that's a Wisconsin thing or he might actually be a bit dull in speech.

I don't like his body language on the court at this point. Wants to avoid contact and seems to wait for something to happen. Way too early gut feeling is this guy is a bust. (And if I say that he's got a great chance to be really good).
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Stanley starts off by saying his name wrong "Henry Ellington" lol

edit: Oh and he sounds fine to me. I half expected him to sound like he had a learning disability or something based on some of yall's posts  I think it's just a Wisconsin accent

Watching that interview, I have to say I really hope Stanley Johns turns into the star of the Pistons, he's the one guy on the team that I believe can be the leader of the team.
