Which former Pacers Player would you want on this year's team?

Post#1 » by Jermainevent » Sun Jul 31, 2016 2:24 am

Only players from the last 20 years are eligible and if they made the all star team while they were with the Pacers they are ineligible.

No Reggie, Rik, DD, Jermaine, Brad Miller, Metta World or Danny Granger. So really, which role player do you want to add to team? You get them at their Pacers prime.

This requirements make it infinitely more difficult, but I think it's considerably more interesting this way.

Mark Jackson, Jalen Rose, Antonio Davis, Derrick McKey, Al Harrington, Jeff Foster, Jamaal Tinsley (Rookie version), Stephen Jackson, Peja Stojakovic, Mike Dunleavy, Jarrett Jack, Lance Stephenson, and David West all seem like prime candidates, from a sheer talent standpoint.

I think it's fair to say this year perimeter shooting is somewhat of a question mark, as is defense. I like Aaron Brooks, but could the team benefit from a more pure-passing point guard? Also, the front court looks strong, but I worry about post defense outside of Myles Turner.

For me, it's close between Jalen Rose, Antonio Davis, Jeff Foster, Peja Stojakovic and Mike Dunleavy based on team needs.

This team's perimeter defense is already going to be rough as is, and adding Rose, Peja or Dunleavy won't do it any favors. However, how much PT would Foster or Davis get with Turner, Young and Jefferson vying for time at the 4-5?

In today's NBA, we've seen how important it is to have players who can stretch it out. While I might get destroyed for saying this, adding Jalen Rose as a stretch forward would make sense for this team. He played 1 through 3 during most of his career and could play the four some in today's NBA. He was a great playmaker, and while his defense wasn't great, Rose in his prime was near All-Star level.

A case could be made for a lot of those guys, so who all do you think would help this team the most this season?

Chris Mullin would fit this lineup quite nicely. Is he within the timeframe. If not please shoot me because I'm getting old.

Regardless, Id take McKey as he was a bona-fide defender that could guard any position.

Boneman, Mullin makes the cutoff, with the team from 1997-2000. His first couple of seasons here were pretty nice as well, but he was a little long in the tooth come year 3. I could see him providing some great veteran leadership as well as great perimeter shooting. Heck, during the lockout shortened season of 98-99 he hit a 73-157 3-pointers (46.5%.)

I like McKey as well, who I think in his prime would have thrived in today's NBA.

Without the 20 year limit, McGinnis easily. Billy Knight too.

With the rule, maybe a healthy Bender. Mullin too.

Im taking Stephen Jackson aka "the ultimate teammate" coined by Tim Duncan. I like young Jack at the two. Can also hold down the three in spurts. Solid defender, good length, good three point shooter, rebounds. Allows Ellis to go to the bench to play the one. Jack makes this team a contender for a chip immediately.

A healthy Jon Bender always makes me go into a, what-if mode. Bender playing at 2,3 and 4 would have given team's fits. Imagine him in today's NBA stretching it out at the four-spot, :droop:.

Jackson is also an interesting choice, one that could really workout for this team, for all the reasons you listed. He isn't a turn stop on defense either like you mentioned. He was a tough player who ultimately should have been a starter on a championship Pacers team. Great scorer, streaky outside shooter with the propensity to explode and decent play maker.

I see a lot of good choice, but the one guy who to me would actually open up this team and make it amazing is prime Mike Dunleavy.

In a prime year, he matched Mullin's shooting more or less with a .605 TS%, draining threes, free throws, and everything in between, and still putting up 19 points a game. Great size at 6'9" and good wing rebounding. By nature of youth and physical traits, probably better than Mullin at defense.

The best part is that he's an off-the-ball facilitator, which would be fantastic next to Teague and Paul. His great vision and passing made the one-two Granger/Dunleavy punch any sort of threat whatsoever on a woeful team.

He can go 2, 3, or 4. This team needs wing shooting and spacing. He's not the most talented guy in consideration, but I strongly believe that his skillset shores up this team's weaknesses like no one else on this list.

Prime David West seems like the best fit to me. It's a tough choice as Jackson/Mullin/Dun are right there. But prime West's biggest thing was he really helped elevate young guys' games just by being a mentor. I think Myles, Teague, and GRIII would benefit greatly this year from that. And even Niang, though that wouldn't likely pay dividends this season.

Beyond that he's a great fit with the starters. Complements Turner great on offense and defense and spaces the floor for the wings. And he's just a bull on offense when needed, which we don't have right now really. Would also make our bench big rotation Thad/Jefferson, which while poor on defense is easily best in the league as far as 3rd/4th bigs go.

I know there's a desire to pick a guy who can move Monta to the bench, but I don't see a player who adds more wins than West.

No love for Peja? In the current nba he could probably play some stretch 4.

Remember, these are in their Pacers prime.

In their Pacers prime? I really think that a wing would be the primary need. Pacers prime Jalen, Peja, or Dunleavy would have to be the guy for me. Mullin isn't far away, but I think his Pacers prime just isn't near what Peja, Dunleavy, or Jalen could bring. Clearly, Jalen would fit more of the playmaker need, while Dunleavy would to a lesser extent. Dunleavy and Peja fill the long-range shooting need.

McKey was a less than 30% shooter from 3 during his Pacers career, so I'd probably pass on that alone.

I'd take Mullin for pure shooting, Jalen for all-around scoring and to bring the ball up, and D-West - even as the league has morphed, there's still room for a bruising PF who can hit the midrange

Love where your head is at.

While i thought about SJax, i would've gone with Jalen Rose as many others. The offense he and PG could bring to this team would be incredible. Would also push Monta Ellis to the bench to be the 6th man.

If i didn't go the route of other posters, i would consider Austin Croshere, from the 2000-01 season. He was all energy guy. He was the heart and soul of the bench. Would dive all over for loose balls, played good defense and hit the boards well. And was a pretty solid three point shooter.

No doubt If we could get a David West from 2012 he'd make a massive impact. I think the need for a SG causes me too look at Lance, I think he benefited from playing with Paul George and West kept him in line. Maybe we can see David as an Asst Coach in a year or 2.

As ironic as it is, I would go with George Hill, that moves Monta to the bench and we get the 3 & D role player we need

Looks like Stephen Jackson is working to get back into the NBA. http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/243056/Stephen-Jackson-Promises-Return-To-NBA
