Good Read on our future

http://www.hothothoops.com/2016/8/2/12343022/will-age-catch-up-cleveland-cavaliers-this-season-miami-heat-east?utm_campaign=hothothoops&utm_content=chorus&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter

Spoiler:
The signing of former Miami Heat center Chris Andersen makes the blow-up of the Cleveland Cavaliers in the near future a near-certainty. The ages of the Cavs players reveal they have limited time remaining as title contenders with their present roster, before their careers expire. The Miami Heat, among other teams, could benefit from the situation.

From the ESPN team database, players on the Cleveland roster include (ages in parenthesis): Birdman (38), Richard Jefferson (36), Mike Dunleavy (35), James Jones (35), Channing Frye (33), Mo Williams (33), LeBron James (31), J.R. Smith (30), Kevin Love (27), Iman Shumpert (26), Jordan McRae (25), Tristan Thompson (25), Kyrie Irving (24) and Kay Felder (21).

Four men are 35+, another four 30 to 33, while only one is under 24 years of age. Time is definitely on Miami's side for the next few years, as its young core of talent reaches their prime years. Meanwhile the Ohio team would mostly consist of guys in their mid-30's and over in 2020.

This season could be problematic for the Cleveland players over 30. Father time makes its presence felt then, as athletes lose an important step towards the end of the long 82-game grind. The great ones adjust in other ways, but the season does takes its toll on the body.

Pat Riley did a masterful job this summer by putting together a young mix of raw talent, along with breakout performances by underachievers. He saw the supporting cast for LeBron faces potential problems as the extra year takes its toll on veterans' bodies. The young duo of Love and Irving are still in their prime, but have been injury-prone in the past few seasons.

A cautious Riley signed people without major physical issues this time around. Dion Waiters, Josh Richardson, Justise Winslow, Tyler Johnson, James Johnson, Derrick Williams, Rodney McGruder, Briante Weber all have legs in their 20's under them for this campaign. With their depth and versatility, the Heat could keep playing times down to simply outlast down an aging Cavaliers team as the season winds down in the spring.

In three years the current Cavaliers team will have six players over 36 years old, and no top draft picks to replace them. At that time the Miami Heat will have a core of experienced talent at the peak of their game. The Eastern Conference race will look very different by 2019, with teams like the Celtics, Raptors and Heat featuring key players 's in their mid-20's. 2016-17 and 2017-18 favor the Cavaliers, but after that the tide may turn as the new generation takes their turn in the NBA spotlight.

Taking responsibility for Miami's change is Dan Craig, of the 46-11 Skyforce. Below he carefully watches Waiters in the gym for the first time as a part of the Heat's team-centric development program.

The only age the matter's with the Cavs is LeBron's. He's 31, as long as he's still good they will be too. Once the decline begins though? Downhill

Miami lacks a bonafide star. Hoping either Rich or TJ turns into one, though

The funny thing is I remember when my body went from "invincible" to "I need days to recover" right when I turned 31. Now true I don't go through the NBA schedule, but I am military (Combat Camera) and played for the Basketball for LA Airforce Base. We played a lot and against Bases all over the west coast. As well as I did combat missions all year.... my body took a beating and the next year I gave up basketball all together.

That Decline that the Cavs are going to have soon is the worry that I had about us last year... just interesting!

I think Hassan will have the first crack at it, then winslow. I am sure we get one in free agency next year as well

And the only age that matters for the Heat is the next ice age, because we have no superstar to build around. Until that changes, the Cavs team plane could go down, and it wouldn't get us any closer to the championship.

Yep, so many factors go in to it. Not only talent, you need the player with the right personality.

Rose seemed to turn some prospective FAs away from the Bulls.

What're you talking about?

The Cavs having a bunch of old role players means nothing, they'll be good as long as LeBron is good which is all I was saying. Who's even talking about us?

As a Blazers fan, I was considering a consolidation trade, but the more I think about it, the more it seems like it would need to be a 3 way.

Why on earth would you want Bosh's contract?

HEAT hasn't had a superstar to build around or been close to a championship since "you know who" left in 2014.

It's precisely why Riley put the full court press on Durant this summer, why he's chosen to have annual financial flexibility moving forward, and why he'll go after the best available superstar next summer... He knows what's up.

Meh, we would have been in the conf Finals last year if any member of our front court was available. When the champ is coming out of your conference, that's about as good as it gets. There was a time when division titles and the 2nd round was celebrated in Miami.

It would depend on his health. The first part of last year, Bosh's play would fit in very well with the Blazers offense.

It would depend on his health. The first part of last year, Bosh's play would fit in very well with the Blazers offense.

Reality is that Bosh is an all-star caliber player when he's healthy. He is healthy now, and could be available for training camp. If the story about him testing negative for the gene that predisposes someone to blood clots is true, then he has nothing more to fear than any other 30+ year old, 7-foot athlete who flies across the country on a weekly basis.

The Heat may not be willing to approve the anticoagulant plan he and his doctors have come up with, but that doesn't mean all clubs will not approve. I'm sure there are a handful that would see it as a calculated risk, and if the price is low enough then why not pull the trigger.

Blazers may be one of those teams, and Bosh's game will fit very well with their current core & their backcourt. The age difference might be considered an issue, but if they continue to put the right pieces around their core, their window opens up a lot wider (WCF), as soon as next year.

Problem is, Blazers have nothing to trade us. They have no space to absorb his contract, no expiring contracts big enough to entice, and no prospects they would want to give that would make us mildly interested in absorbing one of those massive contracts they signed this summer.

Wonder if there was a mince of truth to the report that Heat were promoting Bosh's health to get FA's, I doubt it
