Team's potential vs the East
The way I see it, if Rose/KP play like all-stars, the chemistry gels/talent fits...and the bench is helpful...who is better than us besides Cleveland in the East?
The potential for this team, if it all fits, is as high a ceiling as there has been for a Knicks team in what seems like forever. Obviously concerns, question marks, and I know we're not a real championship contender, but I don't see it impossible to get to the Eastern Conference Finals. We have more things to hope on than many other teams. With all that being said, there are many teams still on the rise in the East...Orlando and Detroit look to be somewhat intriguing, Boston too...but at the end of the day, we have Carmelo Anthony and we may have surrounded him with a cast he can win with.
If Melo can be in the top 7 in MVP caliber play...and Rose/KP are in all-star/borderline all-star level of play...that is a dangerous trio. We have a team that seems intensely motivated to win, many players in contract year, or have a chip on their shoulder.

Re: Team's potential vs the East
I haven't seen anything to base an answer on. Individually we have some talent and some unknowns with upside. On paper we have some versatility too.
Base it on hope and best case scenario we're looking at game 7 ECF with anything possible.
Looking with beaten fan syndrome and we're a lottery team.
I'll wait for the end of preseason before I attempt to answer this question.

Wait 'til first 20 games. That's where you find the answer. Like we did last year, after 20 games, if the team is averaging .500 basketball, they're probably not a playoff team. If they're playing around 12-8 to 15-5, they're a playoff team.

They could start a little slow with all of the new moving pieces and a new HC. I agree wait and see but, I wouldn't put a number on it. I think with a few injuries we could still compete for an eighth seed right now. With nothing to go on.
Still too early even for me to think that honestly.

Not a huge difference between 10-10 and 12-8. As long as the team is treading upward and we stay relatively healthy then this is a playoff team. They're going to start slow as they find chemistry. But if we finish the year off strong we can make noise.

This team is going to get ripped apart by the media when they underachieve. It is inevitable. We are not better than the teams in the East.

Re: Team's potential vs the East
The biggest factor will be KP, not Rose. If KP makes the quantum leap (Clyde voice), this team will be great. Because one young star surrounded by the vets the Knicks have has to = success if the guys stay healthy. Without Porzingis, no one is even jokingly calling the Knicks a super team. Actually, I think without Porzingis, Phil would have been trying to convince Melo to play elsewhere this year, when originally, we thought it would be the other way around. This kid has made everything possible.
So I'd say, the Knicks' potential rides on KP's potential in year 2. I think they're top 4.

We aren't better but we aren't worse right now, we are only looking at teams on paper so you can't say any of those team are clearly better than us with the exception of the cavs. A case can be made for the Celtics Pacers and Toronto but to me the games have to be played to see what we have in comparison to them.. And no way can you automatically put Orlando, Charlotte and Detroit ahead of us..

We are a playoff team. That's as far as I'm willing to go.

The Celtics got better.
The Raptors are idle.
The Hornets got worse.
The Hawks are a question mark.
The Pistons are idle.
The Cavs are idle.
The Heat got worse.
The Pacers are a question mark.
Two teams got worse and two are a question mark. That's half of the eastern playoff teams. I hope we can grab one of those 4 spots.

How is thread any different than all the other "if we stay healthy" threads?

I'm not buying the Celtics Koolaid. I think were are the more talented team when healthy.

Re: Team's potential vs the East
I think the raptors hawks and Celtics all will have some growing pains.. Big pieces coming in losing main guys and guys getting paid.. I think the east is wide open outside of the cavs

If stars align, we can get to ECF.
No way we would beat Cavs in ECF nor Warriors in Finals though.
Most likely, we'll get another first round exit. Probably lose in 5.

Last year Jose Calderon was our starting PG..

Last year Melo got hurt
This year we have :

A revamped bench just bursting with talent and potential:

and a coach that gets it...
