Re: Hoopshype ranks us 9th in East
What I got out of this is that the Pistons have the highest payroll in the league?
Damn.
I did not know that.
Also, this article is just terrible. Bringing up percentages from the whole of last season? tsk, tsk dumb writer...

That's definitely not right. Pretty sure it's Cleveland, although LeBron hasn't inked his deal yet, so it looks lower, maybe?

Yeah, that's not right.
http://heathoops.com/salary-index/cap-room-2016-17/
The Mavericks, Clippers, Grizzlies, Trailblazers, and Spurs all have higher salaries than the Pistons. The Raptors and Magic aren't far behind either. When James and Smith sign the Cavaliers will also easily surpass all of those teams, so Detroit is 7th.
Hoopshype is awful for salary stuff though. Never, ever trust them. Go to Basketball Insiders (Pincus), Yahoo (Marks), or the site I linked to above (Nahmed). If Shams ever gets his site running again then he's a solid source as well.

Re: Hoopshype ranks us 9th in East
I disagree that we don't have a top 10 player at any position besides Center. I consider Reggie a top 10 PG.
Everything else they said is accurate though imo. We lack stars, perimeter shooting, and aren't a good passing team. And when you don't have superstar scorers, you need to space the court with shooters and be a great passing team instead, so the sum of your 5 is better than their 1-2 stars. It's hard to make the playoffs playing iso ball with good but not great scorers and below avg shooting/passing, when the rest of the playoff teams have at least 1-2 stars and good shooting/passing.
Great defense and rebounding can be the equalizer, but we're not an elite defense either, and even the 00s Pistons still needed good shooting and ball movement for that style to work.
I have us anywhere from 4th-9th as I think there will only be few wins difference there, so it's not inconcievable to me that we could end up 9th. There's a lot of good teams in the conference now and it will likely come down to the last few games again. So unless you're a top team with a 5-10 game lead going into April, anything can happen.

I really don't believe for a second there are 8 teams better than us in the East.

Ish is easily a top 10 back up PG, SJ is easily a top 10 back up SF, Baynes is easily a top 10 back up C
Our bench is deeper than the ocean!
Assuming our starters can play things to a standstill I'll take our bench over most
That should prove to be the difference between 3rd in the East & 9th

hoopshype own content always has been awful, this is no exception. They are only good at bundling media/twitter news about the NBA.

We are surprisingly high on the payroll scale, but not that high.
Next season's free agency will dwarf this years, but we probably won't go down in the rankings much since we'll have our own guy to sign. Either way, article has as much credibility as someone's post on these forums. I assure you there are fans of other teams projecting us this low too. Mostly people overrating their own teams or not paying attention to the changes in the east this year and just saying "hey, they barely got the 8th last year, they could miss this year".
And of course we could. A lot would have to go wrong though.

Re: Hoopshype ranks us 9th in East
The East hasn't gotten significantly better, just a lot of old pieces being shuffled to different teams. I don't understand the 9th placement at all. It's supremely bizarre.
In fact, I'd say that the East more or less is the same in general competition wise. The only team worth beating are the Cavs and from then it's just a freefall of different amalgamation of strange East teams.
Our starters are all coming back but we significantly added good pieces to the bench which was our main reason why we often came out flat during the 2nd half due to starters having to play with the bench mob. Now that we actually have a capable bench on paper (especially an actual backup PG), we shouldn't theoretically perform worse unless our starters regress which likely won't happen.
I would say that the main reason we were only placed 8th was because of how up and down our starters were, which was primarily due to fatigue and poor bench play not doing enough. We rectified that now.

People really overrate bench production but yours was awful last year. Should be worth an extra 2-3 wins or so. It's a pretty solid regular season team. I think haVing a young cohesive starting lineup makes you guys like 5th best in the East but an injury here or there and anyone could finish between 4th and 10th really. I think cle, toro, bos are pretty safe top 4 teams and I'd expect the hornets to there if mkg Is healthy .

I'm not sure our starters were really more up and down than most other teams starters. The issue was that their margin of error was zero because of how bad our bench was and how guaranteed we were to lose ground when the subs were out.

I can see that perspective. And it makes sense, the starters pretty much had a lot of weight on their shoulders each night. Each of our mistakes made from the starters were more costlier than other playoff teams I reckon. That and not having an actual superstar to execute consistently was also a factor too.

Maybe it's just my memory being terrible but I don't remember the Pistons being Hugh on salary lists often so when I saw that I was kinda shocked.Snakebites wrote:zeebneeb wrote:What I got out of this is that the Pistons have the highest payroll in the league?

Of course I'm probably wrong and during the Billups and gang run they were probably close to the top.
As for rankings, I like to follow simple rules when rating teams and only get more in depth if after I've done it, something just looks off. Consistency is super important in sports, even more so in basketball because of the comparitivly smaller rosters when looking at pro sports.
A comraderie builds, players get to know each other's tendencies, and spots, and a team can grow excellent just based on playing together even with marginal talent (not saying this team has marginal talent just an example).
Then I look at scoring/defense.
This team is young as hell, but defensively they are average with room to grow.
Same goes for offense. If I'm not mistaken, the Pistons were amongst only a super small amount of teams with all starters averaging double figures. (3 I think?)
If a team has all three of those things, consistently they are almost always an above average team (42+ wins) and then you extrapolate up from there.
This is why when I look at the Orlando Magic for example, they don't have any consistency in any of those catagories to start next season.

Re: Hoopshype ranks us 9th in East
The payroll thing isn't an issue for me. Stan has stocked this team full of players that could be used as assets if a star player became available.
We just made it into the playoffs last year. Being unbiased, a lot of improvements need to happen if we want to move further up the ladder in the east. Most importantly, Drummond's free throw shooting.
