Re: Basketball - Day 7 Game Thread Aug. 12th
Cohesive, meaningful ball movement is always going to be the toughest thing to develop with these teams. Most of these players are used to being the go-to guy on their team, so it's hard to just flip a switch in your head for a month every four years to where your first instinct is to give the ball up so you can get it back. The Spurs from a few years ago are the most "FIBA" team we've ever had in the NBA, and it took them a couple of years -- 100 plus games per season -- to get it down to where it was second-nature. Not trying to make any excuses, but that's just the reality with the nature of U.S. basketball. Fortunately we have such a massive talent edge and have built a reasonable degree of program consistency that it's rarely a major issue anymore.

No, it won't. They're so physically superior they'll just force the other team into turnovers whenever they want.
Yes it will, teams are beginning to adjust. USA will still win most likely but they're developing bad habits and taking some bad shots. There's usually a guy on the floor at all times that goes 6-7 possessions without touching the ball, today its Melo in the 1st unit, 2nd unit it was DeMar.
Ironically they have 14 assists on 15 FGM. But watching the game its noticeable they lack consistent ball movement.
They have 14 assists but are essentially going iso or pnr with 2 players participating in the possession and 3 guys standing.

08/12 teams didn't have those problems.
Kidd/LeBron/CP3 all Elite passers who kept the ball moving, Iggy in 2012 was the same. Only guy whoever went out there trying to get his was Kobe and Westbrook.
This team doesn't have those kind of guys.

American defense is tragicomic.

And yet we still needed some hero ball from Kobe to win those golds. Also, we had LeBron, who is a natural facilitator and can help keep the wheels greased.

But Kobe wasn't doing it throughout the game, when it was closing time he did his job.
Anyway we know Coach K isn't gonna tell Kyrie to facilitate.

2 minutes of lockdown defense leading to fastbreaks and they win any game by double digits. I'm disappointed how the rest of the world doesn't follow their approach to basketball. Less tactics, more gym. This is a sport, not chess.

What would it matter if he did? For better or worse that's not his game. You can't turn a player into something he's not.

it'll open the game for the rest of the team, Kyrie CAN do it and it'll make the team better

He's never been that type of player. Like, ever. It's one of my biggest criticisms, so I don't disagree that it's a weakness. But neither do I think it's realistic to expect a player to change his fundamental playing style. It's not like flipping a switch.

Our centers are terrible pick-and-roll Defenders. Need Draymond in there.

Just a disappointing team overall and it seems as if they view this as more of a fun experience than the actual pressure to win gold at all costs. So much carelessness in this game again, it's unreal.

This team feels bound to be upset in the knockout phase, maybe back-to-back close games will get them to kick it to another gear.

I really don't see the point in picking a team of millionaire narcissistic primadonnas, who look and act as if they should just be given the gold without earning it. Why don't you pick some players who actually want to be there and want to be part of the olympic experience. It is obvious Melo has the fire but most of them sort of only go through the motions.
