Who is your favorite retired NFL player ever?

Post#1 » by bleu » Sun Aug 14, 2016 1:49 am

Curious to see who some of your favorite players of all time are, aside from those who are currently playing

For me, I'm still a younger guy and I wasn't able to see a ton of the NFL legends that I hear about all the time. But my favorite Carolina Panther ever (I'd probably say Steve Smith but he's not retired), is Mushin Muhammad. I remember watching him when I was younger and just thinking "man, nobody can stop that guy". I remember his HUGE catch in the 2004 Super Bowl, and he was always my go-to receiver playing with Jake Delhomme and the Panthers in Madden.

My favorite non-Panther has got to be LT. That man was a human highlight reel. Week in and week out he would put up huge numbers, and he was so fun to watch. Sometimes when he was playing it was almost like somebody entered in a cheat code, and he was one of the first players that I remember really blew me away.

A few others that come to mind: Tony Gonzalez, Jake Delhomme, Ray Lewis, Shaun Alexander

Completely editing my post-and these are only players I got to watch live (born in 88)

Reggie white--GOAT

Barry sanders, could watch his highlight films all day

Hate adding a cowboy to my top 3, but prime time is just too awesome

Other than that-Peyton manning, Jerry rice, Charles Woodson

Making me go down memory lane, but that would be my top 6 of all time even including current players

This is a tough one. I think sometimes players seem so much greater than they may be when you are a kid. So many Chargers I could put up there. Loved Fouts, Winslow, etc, but I was so little I didn't see nearly their entire careers or best games.

The Chargers were so bad for so long that some of the players I liked throughout some of those years stand out, like Natrone Means. Even though Stan Humphries took the only Chargers team to the Super Bowl, I never felt like that team was truly very good but was mostly just well coached and had some incredible plays and things go their way in the playoffs that year. I knew SF was going to kill them. I made tons of money on that Super Bowl. I remember my biggest two prop bets were "Most punt return yards - SF" and "most kickoff return yards SD".

I loved Rodney Harrison when he played for the Chargers but he's out of it for ending his career with the Pats. Seau too.

I always lean Gates. He has been a rock for so long and always seems underrated. I draft him late in fantasy leagues every year because I know Rivers will throw to him a lot and he is just naturally one of the better tight ends in the league, despite getting near the end of his career.

But Tomlinson shouldn't be far behind, if behind at all. I mean there really isn't anything to dislike about the player. He never was quite as flashy watching as his numbers would lead you to believe. He was extremely versatile though. I loved when he'd pass the ball. It's funny, as much as people joke about Marty-ball, he incorporated such plays whereas Norv Turner (offensive genius supposedly) seemed boring and predictable.

I love Rivers because I know with him the team has a chance. Having a good qb is so important that having one for his entire career on your team impacts your NFL experience as a fan to a huge degree.

Of course, after typing all that, I just realized when I looked up at the subject I was replying to, it was retired. I would say probably Tomlinson with Fouts closely behind.

Non Charger - Barry Sanders or Kurt Warner

A Rams #29 not named Eric Dickerson?
For me, it's a three headed monster of Ed Reed, Ray Lewis and Jamal Lewis. Also, Jeff George, Chris McAlister, Zeus Brown, Ravens-era Deion Sanders, Eric Dickerson, Herschel Walker, TO, Randy Moss, Warren Moon, Bubba McDowell, Chris Dishman, Earnest Givens, Michael Irvin, Tony Siragusa, Matt Stover, The Fridge, Ravens-era Rod Woodson...I can probably think of more.
Forgot to mention Kyle Orton's drunk, ugly ass.

I'll go with Favre. Loved Matt Hasselbeck. Warren Moon & Steve Young are a few.

We didn't have the QB to back up our defense at the time, but damn, I got excited when he came back to play the nickel slot for us. He did pretty well for an old guy coming off a layoff.

Too many great players from our once rich tradition Cowboys. Couldn't come up with just one. Bob Lilly, Chuck Howley, Roger Staubach, Randy White, Mel Renfro and Tony Dorsett. Why the hell would I have a favorite player for another team? If there was one from another team it would have to be Joe Montana. Absolutely enjoyed watching that man play football. He is the only QB I would ever think about putting ahead of Staubach.

I saw Jerry's latest creation, the massive indoor practice complex larger/nicer than many FCS football stadiums. Pretty impressive! Seems a bit overkill, but I'm sure the players and fans will love it, and I hear a few local high school teams will be playing there as well so that's pretty cool.

I used to have a bunch of old great cards like his and Lynn Swann and all the players in that era..Staubach, etc...everyone. Then later after I went to college my brother had them and then my step dad put them in storage when they moved and they all got auctioned off when he didn't pay the bill one month. Had tons of basketball cards too...Karl Malone rookies, Dr.J, Magic, Bird, Norm Nixon, Adrian Dantley, David Thompson and all those players..Maravich, Rick Barry.

I just bought a bunch of David Johnson and a Melvin Gordon and Keenan Allen rookie. Also a Johnny Unitas Chargers card. Forgot he played for the Chargers. The guy I bought the David Johnson cards from sent a bunch of good extra ones like Larry Fitzgerald.

Though I know you probably don't care because who cares about the Chargers...no one thinks about them and the Cardinals have won absolutely nothing so who cares about them too? I know I know. But I care.

Sorry, I lied a little. There was one other player I loved to watch play football. Even though I was a huge Dorsett fan growing up I used to love Earl Campbell. Pound for pound Campbelll was the best RB I ever saw. Never saw Jim Brown but Campbell was a lot like him, imho.

Luv Ya Blue Oilers were so much fun. I caught onto watching football around the late 70s and they were possibly the most consistently entertaining team to watch up until they busted up the Pardee/Moon Oilers of the early 90s. They always had players and coaches with big personalities and at the time, the Astrodome seemed like it was the Texas answer to the Roman Colosseum. For this reason, I really hate the Texans and I really hate the Titans who are nothing but a horribly bland spit in the face to the memory of the powder blue and Ernest Givins doing the Electric Slide.

I was most upset when Staubach retired. For weeks as a matter of fact. Roger accomplished a lot in 8 1/2 years but was forced to retire early due to multiple concussions and Landry's unwillingness to let Staubach call plays. It was the major reason we squandered 3 straight NFC championship games after that.
