Good defense is largely based on cohesion and teamwork, and those aren't easy things to develop on teams like this where you have so little practice time.
That's compounded when said defense includes mediocre individual defenders like Kyrie, Carmelo and Cousins. Durant can be good but he's not exactly Scottie Pippen -- especially when he puts in as little effort as he did today. Klay is generally good and at least tries hard, and even he got torched repeatedly. The starting unit was/is just a big negative on that end.
A lot of it comes down to basic effort, too. George is one of our few legitimately great defenders, and he pulled a Harden and got backdoored for a layup. You could probably come up with 10 comparable examples. Just frustrating. As bad as the fourth quarter was, our overall offensive performance was more than good enough to win. But giving up 97 points -- that's absolutely inexcusable.
