Those numbers, along with an excellent arm and defense, and plus speed make him an everyday center fielder.

0-4 wouldn't change the fact that the dude is a legit ballplayer.

Melky needs more power before he becomes a "legit ballplayer".

I think Melky has some power in there as evidenced by today, but he has to show it consistently. And don't start the Bernie comparisions with me, Bernie hit for more power at the same age.

hmmm...now that you mention it :)

Melky at 22 years old .272 AVG, 4 HR, 30 RBI, 5 SB in 249 ABs

Bernie Williams at 22 years old in 320 ABs --->.238 AVG, 3 HR, 34 RBI, 10 SB,

could it possibly be that Melky Cabrera is actually ahead of the learning curve :D

Melky, 2007, 245 atbats - .371 SLG
Bernie, 1992, 261 atbats - .400 SLG

It's not much of a difference, but our offense in 1992 was horrendous and we are not aiming for that now.

I don't think that Melky will ever hit for as much power or as much average as Bernie, but he's certainly making a good case to be our starting CF next year. He's going to need to keep hitting though.

Bernie had better bat speed, a more projectable frame and better patience at the plate. Just because Melky had close to the same stats as Bernie at the same age doesn't mean he will follow Bernie's career path exactly.

Melky will probably never hit 25-30 home runs or hit .320-.340 for 5 seasons, but that doesn't mean he won't be really good. If he DID do that, he'd be one of the best Yankees ever. That's a bit unrealistic.

NYKGM, I'd just like to point out that I was right about not giving up Melky. See, you never give up a valuable everyday player, and someone who was still going to get plenty of ABs, heading into the season for a RP.

I know you liked Melky and I'm not saying you didn't, but you gotta give me some love as being one of the only who didn't want to trade him this offseason.

I'll admit I underrated the age of our OF, even though I did love Melky. But refresh my memory, was it about a specific deal? I doubt I just wanted to deal him, but maybe there was a rumor that I supported?

Melky has been hitting well lately. Hopefully he keeps it up because he can really use him down the stretch.
