Whitt, Martin, and Zaun are the clear top 3. After that, probably Fletcher and Borders.

I thought Zaun was underrated but I always remember Bengie Molina getting far too many AB's against RHP at his expense. And Bengie couldn't hit righties. Drove me nuts.

Nurse is below average at best.
Masai is overrated.

Honarable mention to Benito Santiago, wasn't here long at all but throwing out runners from his knees consistently.

Fletcher's really underrated.
wondering if Whitt was possibly overrated by fans?

if I remember correctly, Fletcher had a great bat but wasn't very strong defensively. At least that was the perception.
Whitt definitely gets points for longevity. I would assume that he has the most AB's of any catcher in team history?

Re: Top 5 catchers in Jays' history
wow, we have had bad catchers. Top 5 I guess I'd say:
Whitt
Martin
Zaun
Fletcher
And then, I guess Borders, getting extra credit for the WS MVP even though he was pretty bad overall. At least he played for quite a while.
Shout out to Lance Parrish, though. Wasn't with us very long but the day I got to spend in the dugout with the team in '95 he was by far the most welcoming and fun guy down there. Probably because he was about to retire 6 weeks later.

Re: Top 5 catchers in Jays' history
This is a great question.
I'm down with:
Martin
Fletcher
Borders
Zaun (reluctantly)
Whitt/John Buck.

Guillermo Quiroz should have made this list by now... I keep waiting.

Is anybody here a marine biologist?

Matheny would have been up there if we hadn't released him the year before he got picked up by the Cardinals...

Gomes. D'Arnaud. Jayson Werth (became an OF but still).
The Jays haven't been very good at keeping the good catching prospects instead of the ones that didn't pan out.

Re: Top 5 catchers in Jays' history
We've had some crap catchers, I'll tell you that. Can't blame AA for wanting to change that with Martin.
How about Robinson Diaz for getting us Jose?
Underrated ones: Zaun (noodle arm aside), Charlie O'Brien (also notable for bringing hockey masks into baseball), and Buck Martinez

But if AA hadn't kept JP Arencebia while shipping out Gomes and D'Araund, spending all that money on Martin wouldn't have been necessary. He was fixing the mistake that he created.
