Way-too-early "Which 2017 free agent is most likely to come to Detroit?"

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Mon Aug 15, 2016 11:58 pm

Which of these is most likely to come here? Tried to exclude unrealistic targets and poor fits.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I don't see us signing anyone of note next off-season. Packaging our current players and the draft seem to be our route for improvement for the next 2-3 years.

None, because Detroit won't have cap space to sign any of them.

Cap space doesn't appear to be a direction this team is headed in.

I choose K, none of the above.

I voted for Olynyk because he's the most likely on the list to settle for the MLE

No signing due to the cap/tax

Dre, JL, Boban
Harris, King
SJ, Mook
KCP, Hilliard, Rookie
RJ, Ish

That's 12 guys

Ray Ray or some other 3rd string PG makes 13

A 3rd PF or SF makes 14

We simply don't have the playing time or money to bring in anyone of note via free agency

"None of the above" for two reasons - we don't have the money and/or I'm not sure we really want any of these guys. Paying top dollar for vets pas their prime can be a risky bet. So Igoudala and Gay - I just don't see us going after those kind of guys. And bottomline, I don't think we'll have the money. Maybe a sign and trade could make that happen, but it is hard to imagine.

See the bolded part...

Assuming we keep our first I believe we'll use it on a 2/3 type since Hilly & Benji aren't guaranteed much of anything moving forward...plus we've already locked up PG, SF, PF & C

SVG has stressed continuity since he arrived. Now he's completely turned over the roster I believe we'll stand pat for at least this coming season

None. Barring trades, this is our team for the next few years (like it or not).

I agree outside of the too good to be true deals he somehow snags out of nowhere.

Would we even want Olynyk for the MLE? Where does he fit without moving someone? Or does he just replace Baynes, and now we have a stretch 5?

Pretty much. I doubt the Pistons use any more money past the minimum on the third center. Assuming Caldwell-Pope is re-signed my guess is something like this:

Jackson / Smith / (2017 1st round pick/cheap free agent)
Caldwell-Pope / (Bullock/cheap free agent/2017 1st round pick) / Gbinije
Morris / Johnson / Hilliard
Harris / Leuer / Ellenson
Drummond / Marjanovic / (minimum contract)

Detroit doesn't have a 2017 second round pick at the moment.

This does seem like the lineup for the next year or so, barring some miracle trade involving Baynes.
