:-o Not trying to change the subject here, but I love the fact that we now have Serge, for at least 1 season, but is anyone else as concerned as I am about him walking after next season? :-o :-o :banghead:

I may need therapy after today but, did anyone else read this?......Thoughts???

Not really.

The way I see it we can go down 1 of 2 roads

1) Serge is a great fit, exceeds his numbers over the past two seasons in OKC, Rob (with his bird rights) signs him to a long term deal next summer for slightly less than max (like he has done previously).

2) Serge continues his statistical decline and appears to be strictly a three point shooter that can block a shot here and there, Rob signs him to an affordable deal or cuts him loose and we have max space again for a great summer of free agency.

I'm hoping for option 1 :D

I also am of the mindset that Serge will be a great fit here, he is in a contract year and everybody on this team (FO included) has skin in the game, they/we all have something to greatly gain or lose this year!

I really hope that this is the season that sets the foundation for the next 5-10 seasons with defense as our identity or........back to the drawing board! Again, I prefer the former!!

Before trade this year: "Serge Ibaka would be the perfect complement next to Vuc. I would do anything to land him here."

After Trade: "Can't believe we traded so much for Serge Ibaka. He is past him prime already. I mean 26yo? #fireRH"

He didn't become a jump shooter until 3-4 years ago. That's when he started moving away from the basket and be more of a spot up/drive guy. Move he was highly criticized for until this very day.

With an ever-evolving NBA where almost all big man are chucking up 3, the guy is just finding a way to maximize his value. A shot-blocking big who can defend multiple positions, guard the paint, and shoot the 3 at a decent rate? Any team would take that player on their team.

I'm saying he hasn't shown anything other than spotting up for jumpers and straight line drives and up to this point those ARE his strengths from what we've seen. So it'll be interesting to see if they use him off the ball or as a go to player. I'm not criticizing his ability to stretch the floor nor did I discredit his ability to defend.

Well, this is the very problem that Serge did not wish to expound upon. For the past few seasons, it has been both a blessing and a curse playing with 2 super stars that commanded touches and shots at an extremely high rate! Which means on offense, his job was to post up at the 3pt line and become a 6'10" decoy or 4th option on offense. What's worse, on defense he was constantly found outside of the paint and switching on either the 3 or 4 positions.

I personally am grateful that OKC decided to exclude him going into a contract year....... now the Lion is hungry!!!

Take a look at this article, the numbers support Serges argument and displeasure with OKC's plan for him.

I agree with your assessment. Its definitely a variable that has to be considered when looking at his body of work. In terms of his displeasure with how OKC was using him, I think a lot of that has to do with him coming up on a contract year and not looking like a one dimensional player. I think he wanted the opportunity to show everyone that he expanded his game which I don't blame him for.

Outside of wanting to see Oladipo play under Vogel, this was the main reason why I didn't like the trade. If Ibaka doesn't re-sign with us this could easily end up being a dumpster fire. We'd likely be a treadmill team, too good for a high pick, not good enough to compete. No direction, identity, or anything to sell free agents on unless Gordon completely blows up.

It's a HUGE concern. Henny's job might be tied to it.

The way I see it, we'll have 5 options:

1) If the Magic aren't on a path projected for the playoffs by the trade deadline, then Ibaka could get traded to a contender. In doing so, we would recoup some of our losses from the Oladipo trade, but would still likely come away losers. Henny could salvage his job depending on the return.

2) The Magic make the playoffs. Ibaka resigns with the Magic. Henny keeps his job.

3) The Magic make the playoffs. Ibaka leaves the Magic. Henny keeps his job, but is on the hot seat.

4) The magic miss the playoffs. Ibaka resigns with the Magic. Henny keeps his job. Has a chance to analyze what went wrong and make fixes to the roster.

5) The Magic miss the playoffs. Ibaka leaves the Magic. Henny likely loses his job. Vucevic becomes trade fodder. If he can't be successful next to Ibaka, then he can't be successful with anyone.

No...Its not a given. I think a lot of people are going to be pissed this season. It is absolutely not a given considering a lot of teams in the East improved. I think we're fighting for our playoff lives towards the end of the season.

This play by ibaka was one of the first things to come to mind when I first heard that the trade went down. We're going to be so good defensively, we'll make the play offs IMO.
