Gobert does what's important in the NBA for a centre - rebound, block shots and play top tier defence while dunking lobs. Pau Gasol is better in international basketball only because he can stand under the basket on defence all day long and not worry about getting a 3 second call. It makes getting a layup or dunk against Spain really difficult because there's virtually always a 7 foot defender in the paint waiting to block or contest the shot.

On the other end Gasol can shoot from the perimeter so Gobert doesn't have the same luxury of just parking himself under the basket for the whole possession.

Gasol has an IQ level that gobert will never reach. TGasol's IQ was obvious since he was still a youngster. Secondly gasol is the 2nd best european ever played overseas(after dirk). You are a little bit offensive towards him i think
...in a different era('90s where centers were superstars) Gasol would have place in NBA. Maybe not as a star, but an important player either way. Gobert would have never crossed the Atlantic. My opinion of course

Gasol is a MUCH better player than Gobert will ever be period, in both the NBA and Fiba. We are talking about a future hall of famer with 2 rings, ROY and the most impressive international curriculum you can think of.

Tony Parker and Boris Diaw take a bow from Spain, as this might be their last appearance? Both class.

That's where I don't agree, I don't feel like gobert is a "top tier" defender... Or if so maybe like Ibaka. Don't get me wrong he's very valuable to a NBA team but he's lightyears away from Kevin Garnett or Tim Duncan anchoring your D contrary to some might think.

In 2014-2015 he was 2nd in the league in Defensive Box +/- and 9th in the league in Defensive Win Shares. He wasn't as good in 2015-2016 but still has really great numbers and his decline probably has something to do with the games he lost due to injury. He's also been top 10 in Defensive Rebound percentage and Block percentage the past two seasons, so I think it's safe to say he's a top tier defensive player in the NBA.

I'm not comparing Gasol in 2009 to Gobert now. I'm comparing Gasol now to Gobert now. No NBA team in the league would take Gasol now over Gobert now.

Gobert is basically one trick pony with no basketball IQ, no shot and no offense whatsoever. He can jump and he is so freaking long that he appears to be ''elite'' defensively while in FIBA basketball, he isn't that good defensively at all.

FIBA basketball exposes and differentiates skill from athleticism/physical attributes.

Welp for Diaw, Parker, Pietrus it has been a ride for many low and some very high. They took French basketball to another dimension and brought us our first international title ever.

I'll always have a soft spot for them (especially Florent Pietrus) even tough I never was a fan of them. I hope we can construct a great team around De Colo, Fournier, Heurtel, Lauvergne, Gobert and those youngsters behind.

Big up to Spain. Absolutely the best generation of international basketball players ever IMHO, props to them. The rivalry overall has been pretty one sided but we fought them back eyes to eyes during 3 years but at the end of the day they are one of the GOAT team ever, we have nothing to be shame about. I will be behind them especially against this Team USA.

Crazy how I can say that after I nearly applaud Batum kicking Navarro in the nuts four years ago

That coin has another side as well. No euroleague team would have taken gobert over gasol even now that gasol is 36.....

Indeed. Gasol would easily put something like 18-10-5 in Euroleague now while Gobert would probably average 9-9 or something like that.

It's not an especially relevant point even if true since both of them would have to take massive pay cuts to play in euroleage instead of the NBA.

It is relevant since this is Olympic basketball topic and it's played under FIBA rules just like Euroleague and everything else outside of N. America.

Sorry, but for me letting small guys to get easy buckets from the paint like in the NBA doesn't realize me. I want to see great ball, but not an easy one, and the defensive 3 seconds clearly outpowers slow bigs like Gasol, and for me that isn't fair, why you have to get exposed outside the paint to let smaller guys score easily? If you have a 5 like Draymond, then Pau will be exposed anyway probably, but not because the rules, just because he's slow as an old man. If you have a big guy that blocks shots in the paint, take him out of there, forcing him to get outside the paint to defend a threat like Green or Speights, or Bosh, someone that make you to get out there to contest them, but not because a rule denies using your strenghts.
When this account gets more "And1"s than posts written ...then my life will be complete. And maybe it will be the right time to hang it up. (Achieved on 2017-2018 season)...but still here.

Just to be clear, I did say in my original post that Gasol was a better International basketball player. The discussion here is about whether Gasol or Gobert is the better NBA basketball player, not about which one is the better International basketball player. Again, I'm not sure why what you're talking about is in any way relevant to this discussion.

BBC worked for me, if you don´t find anything else. It runs smooth and the image quality is pretty sharp.

1st install this extension in your browser; https://mediahint.com/login

Then watch through BBC over here; http://www.bbc.com/sport/olympics/rio-2016

Big up to France for the chins up after (or scarily in the middle of) the terrorist wave. I couldn´t help but visiting Biarritz for some days this month and it was fantastic. We might have Gasol but French women certainly make up for any loss in basketball (not that the Spanish ones are ugly for that matter).
