2016 Raiders defense

Post#1 » by Twinkie defense » Sun Jul 31, 2016 1:11 am

Two rooks look to start...

On the d-line, Jihad and Mario Edwards Jr. to start, with Jelly Ellis in the middle and, of course, Mack and Irvin on the edges in the Raiders 5-2 formation. Dan Williams will come in alongside Jelly on running downs.

Ben Heeney at the Mike will wear the green dot!

Joseph is the other rookie to start. Looking forward to seeing this guy! Our safeties should be improved this season, and our former starter Nate Allen and TJ Carrie are still on the roster.

What the heck is going on with TJ Carrie? Good player, looks like he's solely for depth now, at both the corner and safety spots. DJ Hayden will get yet another chance to show he's not a bust, this year not as a starter, but as the nickle.

Yep, but I also think they want to get another pash rusher (Jihad/Edwards) on the line.

“He has obviously performed extremely well,” Friedman told OC Register’s Bill Plunkett. “What’s more impressive is the work he has been doing on his swing, making adjustments.”

“That process has been fun to watch. All the reports from our staff there have been incredibly positive. Witnessing him the past few days has been great because I think a lot of internal conversations we’ve had with him have really resonated.”

Because the quarterback must go down, and he must go down hard.

Greg Papa and Romanowski pretty critical of Irvin over the first two preseason games, say he looks uncomfortable, slow off the blocks, not getting pressure, unlike with Aldon Smith, other teams don't have to double him, letting them load up on Mack - maybe the role the Raiders have envisioned for Irvin is not a good fit for his skill set. A lot of praise on the other hand for Calhoun in the nickle set as an outside rusher.

George Atkinson was asked: what player do you think is in danger of surprisingly not making the 53 man roster, and he said DJ Hayden

Depth chart out now with Karl Joseph demoted, and Nate Allen back starting at strong safety. That's a bummer; despite Joseph's rehab from injury he was supposed to be the rookie to make an impact this season - not too late to make an impact, but he has not been as impressive as he was expected to be.

With Mario Edwards Jr. on IR :( , Jihad Ward will continue to start, but will move outside with big Dan Williams taking back his old spot alongside Jelly on the interior. I would also expect to see the impressive, undrafted FA rookie Darius Latham, as well as Denico Autry, get rotation on the line.

Damn.
Had hopes he could make it back.

I'm pissed about Karl Joseph.

Karl Joseph is a curious case, considering how much he's been hyped. I hope they're just taking it slow because he missed so much camp time and is not completely fit yet.

On the other hand Jihad made an impact, recovering that first quarter strip sack vs. Brees - offense just needed to make more of that opportunity

So is it the play calling or is it the talent, or is it the talent not executing the plays?

Our D# has been terrible apart from a couple of exceptions, in the 1st 2 games.
