Lakers offseason in review on the trade board
As part of a series of offseasons in review -- viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1467470 -- a few of us on the trade board have been doing, today was the Lakers turn for a review. So please feel free to swing by and tell us what we got right and wrong, and what you think about the Lakers' offseason here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1473646
In general the reviews ranged from expecting 21 to 30 wins, with letter grades all the way from the B to the F (on what the Lakers did with their setup versus the value of a setup that included Ingram).

Dear Laker fans,
Before you lot go over there with pitch forks, remember not to troll. If you are just mad at a bad grade and have nothing to add, this thread might be a safe place to vent. However if you have constructive criticism for the reviewers, do feel welcome to post on the trade board thread.
Cheers,
Slava.

I mean, that's the beauty of America - free speech.
...but man these grades and analysis are embarrassing. Please find a new hobby.
An F for hiring the best available coach and drafting the prospect some pegged as the best kid in the draft, I mean, alright lol.

Honestly, i have to agree with the grades. This off-season was a massive fail outside of the Clarkson signing, new draft picks, Ingram/Zubac.
I'd give us a D/F as well.

Yeah, outside of the Warriors signing Durant, I give them an F as well.

agreed, should've bought out Nick Young with the cap used for the Yi signing.

Yeah in other news, I went to Disneyland last year. Apart from the rides, shows and waterpark it was just an awfully crowded place. D/F as well.

I take my starting point May 18th. And on May 18th, the Lakers already had the #2 pick in a draft with Ingrams and Simmons. So, going from the #2 pick to Ingram is pretty much a wash.
Now, the importance that #2 pick/Ingram is absolutely huge in my opinion:
Ingram is a legit stud of a prospect, and Zubac is a quality pick at #32. This draft was absolutely nailed, and will do a ton to set up the Lakers future. In fact, I would take Ingram and Zubac over everything else the lakers have combined
However, that great news that the Lakers would be going to Disney land in terms of the draft was already there before the offseason started. (Same for Philly).

You cannot do this. There is no mechanism to pay a player more in a current year and thus get to pay them less in a future year except for when they are signed setting it up that way, and then only within the small limits allowed.
The best way to try and do it is trade for a different contract set up that way (SIxers trading Jason Thompson's 2 years for Gerald Wallace's more expensive 1 year) , but I'm not sure there are any that do that.

Don't mind those posts, we were joking with the guy we were quoting. He's been so negative that he's repelling oxygen atoms lately.

Hitting in the draft was the most important thing for us to accomplish this off-season for the health of this franchise. If you're willing to assume that we hit in the draft, not quite sure how we get an F, or even a D for that matter.
Were you grading us on our lack of ability to sign KD? Otherwise I am just not understanding the logic here.

well I didn't think we'd be as bad as we were last season and they proved me wrong epically lol....hoping this is the opposite season, everyone outside of laker fans expect us to be bottom 3 if not the very worse.

Re: Lakers offseason in review on the trade board
Lets see....
Coaching: The Lakers could've hired Ettore Messina, Mark Jackson, David Blatt, or thrown a ton of money at Kevin Ollie
Trades: They could've traded away Russell, Randle, and the #2 pick, and never would've gotten equal or greater value.
Draft: They could've drafted Jaylen Brown, Skal, Maker, or Hield.
Free Agency: Yeah they could've given less years to Deng and definitely Mozgov, but they also could've signed Noah, Turner, and/or Barnes. At least Deng and Mozgov fit a purpose.....

Either that or do nothing. So unless you have better ideas you have to go play in traffic.

The signing of Luke as coach, and the drafting of Ingram and Zubac, alone is worth a grade at minimum of an A.MrWaffles wrote:Honestly, i have to agree with the grades. This off-season was a massive fail outside of the Clarkson signing, new draft picks, Ingram/Zubac.

Yeah, outside of the Warriors signing Durant, I give them an F as well.
Are you trying to compare KD to Clarkson?
This post makes zero sense at all.
Clarkson
Luke
Ingram/Zubac
Draft Picks
were the only good things about this summer.
We still have
two 30 year old declining players for four years on big money contracts
still have zero defense on the perimeter
still have nick young on the roster
ruined our cap space for the future
Signing washed up players and blowing our cap for the future is not ideal
Grade = D

Re: Lakers offseason in review on the trade board
Mozgov was a signing that I think will be a huge regret. I personally doubt he gives us that money's worth for even one season. Besides overpaying for a seriously mediocre guy....I just don't get the fit at all. The trade has been laughed at by nearly everyone in the media who doesn't work for the Lakers. I know I know....they're ALLLL idiots. They weren't laughing when we signed Pau.
Deng was over paid. But to the FO's defense....who wasn't this off-season? Don't like the 4-years, but I'm at least curious to see how he fits - and helps develop this team while he's here. I'm hopeful he works out. More than I can say for the other signing. I've already written that one off as a massive mistake.
Good deal on resigning Clarkson.
Like the T-Black resign.....but with all these centers drafted or signed, you wonder what the point was? Zubac had a darn good summer league. You'd think that would earn him some minutes, no?
Calderon was a good pick up....as it will give us more draft picks. Money we needed to spend, and it's for a single season. Next to Clarkson, it was our best move.
So...while I think the Warriors lost alot this offseason, I think it's pretty hard not to give them an A. Right? I mean, they just picked up one of the best players in the league. So if that's an A.......then I don't see how we have anything better than a C- at best. If your like me, and you think the best 2 moves were resigning a restricted player, and the shrewd one-year rental that gives us a mid 2nd-round pick.....then it's kinda hard to even give them that.
We signed/drafted at least 4 centers right? The year we signed a 'small ball' coach. Yet another fascinating Jim Buss offseason. I personally hope the guy get's voted out and made to run one of the concession stands mid-season. I think it's quite possible we just locked up north of $34mil a season for 4 years, on two players who will contribute almost nothing...and serve only to hinder our youth development. Hopefully I'm wrong about that....but it's hard to imagine a world where either of those two actually live up to anything resembling what we paid them. I'd take last seasons Randle over Mozgov's best statistical season in a heartbeat. Sums it up really.
Great offseason as far as drafting. Resigning Clarkson, and Tarik Black was really good IMO. Just hope all these young guys actually get the lion's share of minutes.....and not the two guys we wasted our $$ on. If Mozgov and Deng are playing north of 30 minutes a game....then what a shame/waste. I'd start Tarik, and bring Zubac of the bench personally. Give Mozgov a shiny thing, and have him stay in the locker room.
D is my grade for Free-Agency. B+ for Drafting. I guess that gives us something of a C to C+ overall. At least we finally got something this offseason. Give ol' Jim credit there. He finally managed to sign someone.
