Re: Around the NBA Thread 2016-17
I forgot where I saw the idea/complaint but someone pointed out how swimming has 10,000 events (chances for a gold medal) while basketball only has two (one for men; one for women). So why not add other basketball-related events -- 3-point shootout, dunk contest, H-O-R-S-E, etc.? It might give other countries a chance at a gold or would it only add to USA's gold stash? I dunno.

Re: Around the NBA Thread 2016-17
As a crushed Aussie I see no reason why the US should restrict their team. It makes it all that more sweeter when they do eventually drop a game. The rest of the world is catching up, its just we don't have the depth to draw on. The only downside I can see is that from the outside it seems like Americans don't value the gold medal at all while most non-Americans would probably place a gold above an NBA ring or at least very close to it.
I think its a simple case of population/depth of talent to draw on. More people, longer history, better chance to produce elite talent. I think of countries like my own, we strike elite players once every 5 or so years and have to coast on that talent as long as we can. Rarely have we had an era like we just had where multiple high talent player have come along at the same time. See Spain and Argentina as teams staying with the same talent for long periods.

I think that elite talent, when it does arrive, just fosters more talent at the grassroots level. Canada still didn't qualify this year, but look out for the next Olympics. Providing that everyone actually suits up, my country might have a shot at a bronze or silver. Wiggins, Thompson, Olynyk, Corey Joseph, Jamal Murray, Trey Lyles, Dwight Powell, Tyler Enis, Nik Stauskas....and Anthony Bennett (
All of these players are byproducts of Steve Nash and Vince Carter, since these are the guys that made basketball popular in Canada. Australia should have more good talent coming in a few years as a result of Bogut, Patty Mills, Exum, and Simmons.

10,000? That can't be right. That seems like an insane amount.

Canada is going to be a squad. Australia too is going to be good esp if Exum can turn out solid. Delly Mills Exum Simmos is a lot of playmaking. Who knows about Bogut. Another 4 years he'll be what 35? But yeah, both Canada & Australia will have good teams.
But Spain seems to be on a down swing. Argentina is done.
France, Lithuania & Serbia will stay solid.

There are 16 events for both men and women in Olympic swimming.

I'm down for more badminton events. Tackle badminton. 5-man badminton. Water badminton.

Speaking of the Olympics, feel like this didn't get enough attention back in the day

I'll never get sick of that video of Chris Childs punching Kobe in the throat. For the rest of my life that video will make me laugh. Love it.

The team-up era isn't dead, but the star player conflict has been experiencing a strong revival. The OKC gang breaks up with hard feelings and now it turns out Wall and Beal can't even get along.
Also good notes about Wall's jealous tendencies and tendency to favor partying over training.

The Wizards will try like hell to make it work. The duo led the Wizards to two consecutive conference semifinals, and if it weren’t for Wall’s broken wrist in 2015, they might’ve advanced to the East finals. They were that close to getting pummeled by the Cavaliers. Wall and Beal have experienced success before, and that’s why they’re both reaching across the aisle to try and make this work.
But if Wizards head coach Scott Brooks can’t calibrate the pair’s settings, then breaking it up could be for the best. Wall’s cheap deal keeps him awake at night, but conversely, it makes him an even more attractive trade target to other teams. Beal could draw interest, too, though teams are divided on just how valuable he is, considering his injury history and limited skill set.
In 2013, Nene said of his Wizards teammates, “Our young guys must take their heads out their butts and play the right way, because I’m getting tired of this.”
Three years have passed, and their heads are still stuck. If John Wall and Bradley Beal don’t start making changes, the front office will have to.
Also good notes about Wall's jealous tendencies and tendency to favor partying over training.

Reading the article it sounds like Wall will be all about a renegotiation and extension when he is eligible next summer. Looks to me like the Wiz have not planned on keeping cap space open to do so.
Looking at that and this article it wouldn't surprise me in the least if he was moved this deadline or next summer and Washington moves on with Beal.
I was never a huge fan and the article and quotes make him seem even more douchey than he early did.

Yeah, John Wall spends way too much time complaining about other people's contracts, which is amazing because he was paid market value at the time he signed his deal. The guy needs to STFU and win games. Plain and simple.
As for Beal - yeah, I'm not too fond of him either. I don't think I'd give up more than a non-Nets pick and expirings for him. His injury history is too much of a red flag for me. And even then, I'm not sure how well he'd mesh with IT, since he's just as ball-dominant as John Wall is.

The NBA break is way too long =_= They should shorten the games in the season, spread them out and then get them back in action by September
