I would've been fine with making a cutoff of 1970 just for the purpose of this list, arbitrary sure, but didn't need to take anything away from the basketball played before then. Just like there's list of top x players of the past decade, 25 years, etc.

But its pretty crazy to assume someone like Humphries would dominate back then with his strength and athleticism, but not assume the same thing for players from back then with a modern training and diet regime that likely began at an early age. It goes both ways

Again, I'm not talking about superstars and freaks like Wilt. Wilt would be a great player nowadays, I'm pretty sure about that. But it's impossible he would dominate the game like he did. So many players didn't have even a pro athlete rutine, diet, training, etc... I mean, I don't know how a man can't see the professional sports have grown in so many aspects that it's uncomparable. Collymore posted a game which is near to the line to what I can consider professional basketball, and it's not even the same sport.

I consider you a serious poster, and a real fan. I also appreciate your endorsement of science as the best approach to describing and understanding the natural world. We are like minded in this respect. There is nothing in science to indicate the stuff of humankind has changed markedly since way back in the 60s. I think you might be assigning too much importance to extreme athleticism in the making of great athletes. Some of these guys were more athletic than others, but strength and "want to" played a big role at the 4 during this period. The rules of the game have changed over the years, and that makes direct comparisons difficult. Both Piston championship teams played really excellent defense suited to the period in which they competed. Which was better? I've heard differing opinions.

Training techniques have changed over the years, but these guys were all products of a competitive athletic process and NBA jobs were coveted. The little video bolsters your position, but I think that was the point of it.

I confess to being relieved that you are "pretty sure" Wilt would be great today. I'm of the opinion that young Wilt remains the greatest combination of size, speed and strength the game has seen, and would be dominant in any age of basketball. Posting video of a much more mortal Wilt near the end of his career is being a tad bit deceptive.

While confessing to being a bit of a kidder, I'm entirely serious about my thinking that the best rose 'way back when' much like they do today. The count of great players has gone up as the population is larger and worldwide recruitment.

A whole lot of who's in the Top 10 amounts to luck. Sabonis might be on such a list if he were born in the USA. Jordan might be off the list because the docs screwed up his foot injury like they did with Bill Walton or Grant Hill. I'm so not losing sleep over "Top 10" sports listicles, unless it's maybe "Top 10 MILFs Manocad has banged" (POIDH ).
