TUF 24 + 12/3 finale card with Mighty Mouse

Post#1 » by Jasen777 » Fri Jul 22, 2016 4:24 pm

So they finally got the whole flyweight with the winner getting a title shot thing sorted out. Exclusively title holders from minor orgs. Pretty good talent level for a recent TUF probably. I might even watch a little. Benavidez and Cejudo are the coached which doesn't make any sense to me, not only might they have to fight one of these guys at some point, they have to train guys to do something the could not. Should have just gone legends, like Forest and Liddell or something.

Isn't that the channel that WEC was on?

Pros of this season:

-All current champions is something they've never done before, might make it more interesting both from inside the cage and from a psychological perspective.

-flyweights usually are in great shape and have great skills.

-potential to see a fight as great as Johnson vs. McCall 1.

Cons of this season:

-How much does being a champ in an organization no one has ever heard of really matter?

-They could all be super well rounded guys who aren't elite at anything who mainly bounce around each other, providing little to no highlights all season.

-Johnson vs. McCall 1 was such a great fight that I tend to get excited for every flyweight bout and then disappointed in it once it's over.

I haven't watched TUF in a while, and I don't know if this format will get me back in, but they really went all out on the personalities with Benavidez and Cejudo as coaches.

Whoa what a fight. Now that there exists a foxsportsgo roku app, I will probably try to tune it at least for the fights.

Dana should lay off comparing how these guys would match up with Mighty Mouse. Also a little weird to hear all the respect for other organizations' champions from Dana.

A lot of those orgs are on fightpass though (I think) so them doing well only really helps him. I'm also assuming that them getting a little shine was part of the incentive for letting their guys compete in the tournament.

Oh sure, I just meant the inconsistency of Dana (which is no surprise of course), compared with his treatment of Askren, etc.

Wowzers. That was a great episode.
I've long been disinterested in the 125 division, but these types of ideas could peak some interest. It allows me to get some name value to guys.

This is an interesting season with interesting fighters. But, none of these guys have anything for DJ and I wish Dana would stop talking about how each guy could give DJ trouble. I know he's just selling a fight, but it's laughable nonsense.

While no one here is going to beat DJ, about half the guys here deserve to be in the UFC and could bring a much needed influx of talent to a stale division if they keep a good chunk of them.

And hopefully after this season we take TUF out behind the barn and shoot it. And in it's place I want a once a week, hour long, 2 fight card from the TUF gym. No big names or anything, but maybe an outlet for up and comers.

So true. I'd probably be more interested in the Reis/Mouse fight than whichever dude wins this, whether it be the 125 champ of Alaska or Idaho or wherever lol.

I watched the first episode, and I think I'm gonna be in on this season. At least the fights.

I won't be able to take 12 more full episodes of Cejudo's hair.

The guy from Alaska might be clinically dead right now after that fight, so knock him off the list.

I think the UFC might be on to something with this format, at least for maybe one more season. Let's take a stale division like 205 and have the UFC offer an open invitation to all light heavyweights on the roster that they can go on TUF and if they win they get the next title shot. If the big name guys don't want in, that's fine. But it could be used to jump start some fresh blood into some of these divisions.

I'd laugh for a year if Bader wrestle effed his way to a title shot.

The problem with any other season like this, or even something like season 4, is giving the winner a title shot at the end.

Without the title shot, the stakes aren't as high, and they might not attract the same level of fighters.

At the lower weight classes, you'd get great fights, but at 185 and below there's already a waiting list of legit contenders.

At the higher weight classes, I don't want to see a tournament of 16 non-contenders. Imagine that at HW? Would be so bad.

The idea of scrapping TUF and just doing a weekly show with live fights is fine, but I don't know if it would draw the same number of viewers as TUF. If both would be profitable, they could just do both. I'm sure Fight Pass would be happy to have the content.
