Ranking the top 5 Wizards/Bullets by Position

Post#1 » by jivelikenice » Wed Aug 31, 2016 4:26 pm

So we've been ranking the top five Wiz/Bullets by position and so far have hit on the PGs and SGs. I've been outvoted on a few of these and think there have been some omissions but thought this might make for some fun off-season chatter as the wait til TC really slows down about now.

Doing research on this had me looking at a lot of the articles that came out after the Webber trade. That in hindsight hurts more than even the early end to the Gil era.

Title says "top 5 Wizards/Bullets by Position," slide shows have Chris Whitney, Deshawn, etc. but don't have Monroe, Chenier, Porter, etc. Did it start in the 90s or something?

Yeah, starting point was the 90s. Unfortunately I was the only one who can track back to the 80s...LOL Prior to that we'd be regurgitating information on players none of us ever watched live.

Well, maybe some of us...but I get your point. You can find some pretty good footage of some older Bullets players if you're curious. Earl Monroe fits in pretty well on the timeline of flamboyant scorers in the generation just before Dr. J hit the scene.

God Dammit, could we not have managed to stick like Roger Mason on the list instead of DeShawn?

Rex Chapman was in the 90's, wasn't he? Surely, he's better than Deshawn.

Chapman was in the 90s. The cut off line is elastic, most of the players are Verizon Center era, 1997 (?) onward.

My objection to DeShawn isn't so much that he's obviously not good enough to be on the list, though it speaks to decades of garbage rosters; it's more that he personally represents to me spate of roster decisions that kept Gil at his best from being what he might have been in the league.

Are we talking career value as BullWizzes or peak?

Greatest Bullwizzes from Baltimore era on without doing analysis:
PGs: Arenas, Wall, . . . Michael Adams, Kevin Porter, Archie Clark (Rod Strickland?)
SGs: Chenier, Jeff Malone, Earl Monroe, Riordan, Beal (Michael Jordan? cheating a bit here with Riordan and Jordan who played SF for us)
SFs: Dandridge, Marin, Bernard King, Caron Butler, Juwan Howard (Greg Ballard?)
PFs: Hayes, Gus Johnson, Webber, Jamison, Gugliotta (Mahorn?)
C: Unseld, Bellamy, Ruland, Moses Malone, Gortat (Brendan Haywood? Manute Bol? Georghe Muresan?)

Not exactly the Lakers ATG team.

Reading the writeup on Strickland, I wonder if we were watching the same guy. Next to Georghe Muresan and maybe Rex Chapman, he would be the guy I would say whose numbers OVERRATE his value. Inconsistent effort on defense, pounding the ball in place to eat up the clock on offense, piss poor practice attitude . . . to say nothing of the hot dog incident, this isn't a guy with positive non-stat value, quite the opposite. Talented, sure but not a guy I'd want on my team unless you have strong team leaders who, like Rodman in Chicago, can kick his ass when he slacks off. Since I generally want leadership from my PG, I don't want any part of Rod Strickland.

My personal favorites from as long as I've been watching the squad ('95 and up)

PG: Arenas, Wall, Chris Whitney
SG: Rip, Tim Legler, Hughes, Playoffs Beal
SF: Tuff Juice, MJ, Otto
PF: Webber, Tawn
C: Big Gheorghe, Brendan whenever he was pissing off LeBJ and the Crab Dribbles.

We added the SFs.

Cutoff was 90s but with only two of us being 35+ we're getting out-voted on some of the early 90s players. Rex Chapman was very good in 93-94 but the team was just awful and even than he didn't have the highest WS on the team (Don MacLean did). I thought Calbert deserved to crack the top 5. In the end I think he underachieved and went into a shell anytime Juwan and CWebb shared the court but he played ins somce relavatn games at that time and competed on both ends of the floor.

I got to write about Rod. He definitely had all those issues you mentioned above and I think those stood out especially after the team began to sink after the trade with Sacramento. I loved his game his first two years here though. He was absolutely unstoppable (when he did show up) and defenders couldn't keep him out of the lane. Also I didn't consider him to be a player who pounded the rock. Webber, Howard, Muresan, and Cal all got their touches with Strickland....but maybe I'm not recalling entirely correctly.

I don't remember Cheaney playing much SF for us, he played the great majority of his minutes at the two in my memory.

Harvey Grant was actually a pretty good SF, but that may be going back too far into the early 90's.

Don't remember Harvey as ever being above average even; Don Maclean had a very nice year for us offensively (although it was the only good year of his career as he went to Detroit as a FA and disappeared into obscurity).
