Paul Pierce Still Undecided About Playing In 16-17

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Sep 7, 2016 12:45 am

Paul Pierce remains undecided about continuing his NBA career this season.

"Depends on the day I talk to him. Paul has had the summer, he's gone back and forth," Doc Rivers said while back in Boston to host the annual ABCD Hoops Dream fundraiser at TD Garden. "I think he has a right to do that. I really do.

"Paul didn't have the best year last year. I don't think he wants to go out that way. So I think that's why he's working to try to come back. But he still may change his mind next week. So we just have to wait. I told him if I see him at training camp, I'm assuming he's playing."

Pierce has two seasons and $7 million remaining on his contract with the Clippers.

Rivers believes Pierce should sign a one-day contract with the Boston Celtics when he does finally decide to retire.

Maybe for most players it's not a big deal, but for a 39 year old chunky guy barely hanging on who doesn't even know if he wants to continue then there is a problem IMO. If he was serious about trying to bounce back he would come into the league this year in tip top shape and I kind of doubt that the case. At his age and conditioning you can't just expect to play your way into shape in camp. I'm 37 and probably have as good of abs than he does which is kind of an issue for a professional basketball player.

One thing Doc did say though that's entirely true about him having the right to comeback if he wants. Absolutely, cause Doc gave him that contract. He still owes it to the franchise to not string it out and be in top shape if he returns.

Dudes sounds like he's probably sick of it honestly and the working out but if I were going to do it I would view it as it's only one more year and I'm going all in or just retire. If I did do it I would be in the gym every day losing fat and getting muscle because with his old man game he could really be effective at the PF. At this age you can still get stronger and that still would help at the 4.

Seeing your ability decline so much so suddenly probably rocks you psychologically. We can pretend we know what that's like, but it's a lot more significant if you're coming from being one of the top players in the league. The confidence is easy then.

He should give it another run. Talk to Peyton Manning about his final season.
The pain is temporary, the greatness you achieve is forever.

The thing with him and the way the NBA is changing is that he could still be effective if he just concentrated on being a small ball PF. He's crafty enough on offense to use most NBA 4's and strong enough to take the 3's if they played smaller guys on him and not get killed on D at the 4. If he had got in the Gym and came in in top shape I do actually think he could have had a good year. I think the biggest complaint on him last year is he came in fat and kind of tried to play his way into shape during the year and eventually finished a little better. That's just lazy. If your serious about it you need to be serious about it.

I would think if Pierce was serious he could come in stronger and ready to play 15 to 20 minutes a game at the 4 if he really wanted to.
