Earlier this evening I sat and listened to a young woman explain to me that she thinks that the Houston Rockets need to change their team name. Her reasoning is that when she hears "Rockets" she thinks weapons and warfare. She suggested that our team's name could be psychologically damaging to the minds of children.
For the first time in my life as a Rockets fan I was hoping that Clutch, the Bear would show up and hit someone in the face with a pie or spray them with silly-string. I'm still somewhat convinced that someone was playing a prank on me.

Ridiculous, but not surprising.
Did she also speak with vocal fry? That would make it more amusing(and infuriating).
Perhaps they should change their name to the Red Rockets just to annoy her further.
Spurs need to change their name too, because I don't condone animal abuse and that name is deeply offensive.

We watched the tragedy unfold. We did as we were told, we bought and sold. It was the greatest show on Earth...but then it was over.

Oh, I tried to explain to her the obvious thing about Houston...space program...eagle has landed...
And she just went on about how the space program is unnecessary and a drain on funds that could be used elsewhere.
The Universe did not want me to like that woman. But I was civil, because these were people my girl works with. 10 more minutes and I may not have been able to control myself any longer and might have gone Professor Chaos on her!

But that is a damned good point about the Spurs. I'll start a Twitter hashtag now!

When before the Orlando Addicts and Miami Hookers are both potential team names..
She must have not grown up in the era of the Washington Bullets(creative name) if she finds Rockets as a psychologically damaging name.

Ha! I should have brought up the Bullets. Actually, no, it would have meant a prolonged conversation when I was already trying to get to the evac point.
But now that you mention Orlando, it brings to mind a bit of hypocrisy from the NBA. A while back they did not allow the relocated Memphis Grizzlies to change their name to the Memphis Express (which would have been awesome) because they claimed it was too close to a business sponsorship (Fedex is based out of Memphis); but they allowed Orlando to be called the Magic. Now, unless there is some underground society of witches and warlocks in central Florida, then I'd assume that "Magic" referred to the Magic Kingdom, aka Disney.
So how is one OK, but the other is not?

Robstown High School and Hereford High School, both located in Texas, are known as the Cottonpickers and Whitefaces respectively.

You are right it is very hypocritical there. I'm surprised Stern banned that name. I'd also point out that before us there was the Seattle Supersonics which referred to a specific airline project by Boeing.
