Wood to Return as a Reliever

Post#1842 » by Ranma » Fri Sep 16, 2016 1:46 am

As we've discussed before, I think Wood could be dominant out of the bullpen.

well Hill finally blew it. but we only have 16 games to go. with 16 games to go, and the magic number being 13, nothing has been won just yet but the probability is on our side. the Giants could win 2 out of the next 3 against the Cards. if we win just 1 at least againt the Dbacks we will be just up 3 games going into the 3 game series against the Gnats. I think it is far more likely that we are up 4 games than 3 going into that... but even if we do not, it is still very likely we at least win one against the Giants. which means we will still have a 2 game lead after a 1-2 series against the Gnats. after that, we both play the Padres and the Rockies before we go into the show down season ending, Vin Scully's career folding series in San Fran to complete the 2016 reg season. we should wrap it up but we should also know nothing is guaranteed. we need to buck up and get some more Ws and knock down the magic numbers before we even get to the final series againt the Gnats. no need to elevate old Vinny's blood pressure by making his childhood favorite team to have a chance.

Neduardo DePodesta.
You have any insight as to why Corey's UZR is so high but his DRS is -2?

cuz they are similar but not the same.

UZR is a simple +/- system. say Gonzo laid out and caught a linedrive on the 1st baseline that 99% of the 1Bs don't make, he gets +.99 points. when Bill Buckner laid an egg in the world series that 99% of the 1B would make, he got -.99 points. throughout the season all the plus and minus scores add up to make the current UZR number for Corey Seager, which then means he made more plays other shortstops in the game today probably would not have.

DRS adds good fielding plays and bad fielding plays on top of that. say Corey got to the ball 50% of the others would have, good for him. but instead of fielding it cleanly to turn a double play, he bobbled it for a second and rather than making the throw to the second, he only had a shot to throw it to the 1B and get one out instead of two. well Corey just got a - score on his DRS whereas UZR doesn't care about such. Tomas made a spectacular play on the foul ball to the right field yesterday which looked like a great play, but most RFs would have gotten to that ball making it look routine. say, at 98% of the time. then that sliding catch in the outfield got Tomas +0.02 point for what at the time looked like a spectacular play, but a few plays before that he let a line drive go pass his glove and have it drop behind him for a double (or was it triple?) yeah Tomas got some serious - points for that one. When Puig would lay out and let the ball pass him, the same thing would happen but when Puig lets the ball drop in front of him, he would get much less - points on him since a ball dropped in front is more likely to end up a single, whereas a ball dropped behind you is most likely gonna be an extra base hits.

so, it happens quite often that a player's UZR and DRS do not mirror each other. no big deal.

Postseason Bullpen Additions

Post#1847 » by Ranma » Sun Sep 18, 2016 11:52 pm

It's not like our starting rotation for the postseason has been settled, but the addition of both Ross Stripling and Alex Wood to our bullpen could be great options for the playoffs.

... and we still have more coming... position by position I might add.

1B Gonzo right now, and our #1 overall prospect Cody Bellinger will be ready conveniently as Adrian'z contract expires.

2B is with Utley this year, will probably sign him again for another year while Kendrick is still under contract with Willie Calhoun coming up at the end of both of the vet's deals

3B Turner now, we may resign him to a long term deal but looks like Rob Segedin being a band-aid if needed. this is one spot that is without a clear cut A+ prospect ready to fill in.

SS Seager is just starting, but we also have our 1st rounder this year, Gavin Lux and a glut of B level prospects for this job if Seager is the one to move to 3rd in the future, just in case.

C Grandal is young. Barnes is ready. even Kyle Farmer is there if needed. WIll Smith maybe the future. we are set.

CF Joc and **** for the next 4 more years at cheap. there is also Thompson.

RF Puig maybe on the trade block ( I hope he stays) but Toles, Verdugo, even Bellinger could fit here if we choose to extend Gonzo.

LF filled with almost ready prospects right here the most. Yusniel Diaz, Jacob Scavuzzo, Johan Miesis although he has an arm for a RF, Mitchell Hansen, Thompson and **** could fit here as well.

SP Julio, De Leon, Stripling, Brock, Yadier Alvarez, Buehler and Sheffield them Vanderbilt boys, Trevor Oaks, I mean it goes on and on and on.

yeah I guess what I meant to say is that we have one of the deepest farmhands in all of baseball. and we are still a contender as is. we have a very bright future.

just a thought...

2017 will be unbelievable for the dodger rotation with all the arms returning from the injuries coupled with the youth movement ready to claim their stake.

Kershaw
Maeda
Kazmir
McCarthy
HIll ( if we get him back, which I am about 80% sure, and if he does he will be our #2 guy)
Ryu
Wood
Urias
De Leon
Stripling
Stewart

that's 11 rotation worthy starting pithers. in fact I think there will be at least a couple of trades using our assets to fill in whatever we maybe lacking by then.
ehhhhh f it.

Backwoods Bum starting a fight with another Latin player over some unwritten rule.

Color me shocked.

I was nervous about last night's game given our history against Matt Moore and the fact that the series was on the line and a loss would go a long way into making sure we had to clinch in SF.

What a spanking we put on them though.

I am loving the fight and the energy in this ball club.
