Caldwell-Pope, Bullock Discussing Contract Extensions
No surprise about Kentavious but Reggie also wanting to stick around is nice. He's a great fit in the limited role available with Caldwell-Pope and Johnson taking most of the minutes at shooting guard. If both those guys agree to extensions (and I realize this is only talk right now which happens regardless in any expiring contract situation) then the only roster change next summer might be Baynes opting out and Detroit replacing him with their 2017 first round pick. Barring trades of course, which is always an option with this front office.
If Bullock does stick around that doesn't bode well for Hilliard's playing time even if he bulked up to play some small forward. It's not like there's any less competition at that position. Gbinije will probably have a very hard time trying to get on the floor as well.

Re: Caldwell-Pope, Bullock Discussing Contract Extensions
Not really a fan of an extension for Bullock unless the price is very reasonable. I just don't think he's all that good.
KCP? I'd be pretty surprised if we agree to an extension with him. He's in line to cash in pretty big next offseason and I think he knows it. Doubt he'd accept anything we'd want to offer him now.

I wouldn't be surprised we come to agreement with KCP. It isn't going to be cheap. But if you had a chance to sign a multi-year deal for $20M a year, guaranteed, you should seriously consider signing it, even if you could possible get more by waiting a year. Good for KCP, good for the Pistons.

^I guess I'm hoping we wouldn't offer that so early in this process. And I'd be surprised if we did.

I hope if we extend KCP it'll be under 20m.

7M a year for a backup in a limited role?

I wouldn't extend either. I'm still unsure on how good KCP can be. He'll play for his worth this year. If he can hit 37% from three, I'll gladly pay him whatever he wants.

That would be a huge mistake.

1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Beal 22.1
Parsons 22.1
Barnes 22.1
Batum 20.9
Crabbe 18.5
Fournier 17
KCP won't come cheap. 20 per looks about right.

No reason to extend both. None. One or the other would make some sense, though I'd rather let both see RFA - let them play out the season to see what they are.

I smell 4 yr, $76 million.
Bullock I'm guessing will get MLE-type money - start around $5.6 million. So three years, $18.5 million..... team option third year

Re: Caldwell-Pope, Bullock Discussing Contract Extensions
We don't need to extend KCP yet, but if we can get him to commit at a fair value for both parties, it makes sense for both to do it now as opposed to waiting. Pistons have no cap space, so it's not the same scenario as with Dre last season.
I think a 5 yr, $90 million extension would be reasonable for both. It locks him up long-term, and although he would probably get a better deal in the open market next offseason, it's still big money and gives him some peace of mind in case of injury.
As for Bullock, he hasn't shown enough IMO to warrant an extension at this time. If we can get him for dirt cheap it might make sense, as his value could go up if he has a nice season. But I'd focus on KCP first. If we can extend him before the season, great. If not, it's not a major issue.

Re: Caldwell-Pope, Bullock Discussing Contract Extensions
I'm pretty sure SVG wants to see how this group works together before making any additional trades.
For example, we started last year with Illy starting at the 4, a player Stan had supposedly been after in the past. After seeing the offense with Ilyasova (and Jennings' lack of full recovery), and once Tobias was available again, he and Jeff Bower made the move. Sometimes you don't fully see the limitations and strengths of players until they play in your system.
This year, we'll see what progress Dre, SJ, and KCP make, and we'll get a longer look at Tobias' fit. I'm sure SVG will also be looking at Reggie's defense, Boban's ability to contribute, and the new bench pieces in general.
I won't be the least bit surprised if there's a mid-season trade, but I will be surprised if it happens in 2016.

Because of the price it will take to extend him, I think I'd be pretty content if SVG's just lets him play out the season and show that he deserves it.

Re: Caldwell-Pope, Bullock Discussing Contract Extensions
Bottom line, we're going to have to pay KCP more than he's worth, because there will be heavy demand for shooting guards, period. Wings in general got some ridiculous contracts last summer, and it's only going to get worse. If he does agree to an early extension, I'm guessing 4/88, like it or not.

Totally agree with this. And let's face it, Detroit is not a big free agent destination. IMHO, KCP is going to be an AllStar. He needs to shoot better, but that can be done with hard work. He is already an AllStar Defensive player. So I wouldn't want to let that walk away. Pay him and our core is set. Sure it's a risk, but so is every single contract that is signed. If things don't work out, we can always do some trading, but if we have him signed, we're holding the cards. I also don't want to hear about his contract all season long. I don't expect us to sign a free agent that is better than KCP, so why don't we sign him when we have a chance?

Re: Caldwell-Pope, Bullock Discussing Contract Extensions
Don't need to let him walk away - he's an RFA and we could match. Let him play out the year and prove to be an all-star, I have no qualms paying him what he's worth if that's the case. But I mean the best case for him is he's an all-star and gets a legit max offer - that probably costs us $3M more per season than he'd sign for now. But if his shot still isn't falling we could be looking at overpay him by near 10M of what he's probably looking for right now if we extend him by November.
I'd offer him 18M a year for four come last week of October. Take it or leave it.
