Lose 12 to draft and start the season in playoff spot, not bad

I was a little surprised to see where Texas and Wisconsin were in the AP Poll, nice to see BYU getting votes though :)

Too high (in the AP poll):
TEXAS. Waaaaaay too high. Jumped 25 spots for beating a team that was also ranked too high.
Georgia. They beat a solid North Carolina team, but I'm just not sold on them as a top 10 team yet. I'd bump them down 3 or 4 spots.
Notre Dame. Shouldn't have started anywhere near 10 IMO, so bumping down to 18 after a loss isn't adequate. Should be out of the top 25.
Miami. Let the U hype train begin again...until they play somebody who doesn't suck. Just like every year.
TCU. Barely squeaked past FCS South Dakota State, giving up more than 40 points to them. I know a win is a win, but they looked bad.

Too low:
Iowa. If an SEC team had the season they did last year, they would have started in the top 10 no question. It's hard to take much away from a win over Miami Ohio, but I think they should be a few spots higher.
LSU. I typically side away from SEC teams, but LSU lost to a solid Wisconsin team and dropping 16 spots is an overreaction.

Just right:
Houston. They looked very, very good against Oklahoma, and I love this team. I'm not quite ready to put them in the top 4 like some of the voters were, but there is no question they are a contender.
Alabama. No questions here.
Louisville. Many feel that they are overrated, but I think that Louisville is in for a huge season. Their QB had 6 Touchdowns at half time last week. 6.

Houston getting #6 really surpassed my expectations. I was thinking they'd fall in the #9-12 range.

Texas jumping to #10 was purely based upon the name of the program.

Can anyone explain how Texas ends up ranked in the AP and Coaches polls?

  • Quality win? 1–3 Notre Dame
  • Quality loss? 2-2 Cal
  • Memories of Recent Awesomeness? lost 7 games the last two seasons

Because they are Texas, and Notre Dame is Notre Dame and they are always both overrated. The road loss to Cal isn't terrible, considering Cal's losses are both road losses to teams in the top 28.

I don't see too many teams behind them that seem really good, though UCLA might be better, as they lost to two quality top 10 teams.

Yeah, it's an absolute sham. I very strongly believe that there are 25, probably more, teams that could smoke Texas. But they've got the name and the $$$ so....

Not terrible. But for every other ranked team with a loss, the loss comes to a higher ranked team. Texas is the lone exception.

bwgood77 wrote:I don't see too many teams behind them that seem really good, though UCLA might be better, as they lost to two quality top 10 teams.

I'd put Texas in the 35-40 range, so I think several teams are better.

  • UCLA
  • Arizona State (4-0, and beat the team Texas lost to)
  • West Virginia
  • Oklahoma (only losses are to teams that pretty much everyone has in the playoff right now)
  • Colorado (only loss to Michigan)
  • North Carolina

I feel like Texas is getting extra credit for the controversial ending to the Cal game. Refs flip that call, they have, what, 2% chance to win that game?

(As opposed to the .000001% chance they had if they don't let that guy waltz untouched into the end zone in the 1st place? If he trips over his shoelaces after he gets the first down, game over. Let's not pretend Texas made a great a play, and then got cheated out of it by a bad call.)

I'm surprised Colorado is as good as they are. Yes, any undefeated team who has beat some tough opponents should be ranked right now as well (ASU).
