Re: Music to my ears: Ibaka Wants To Stay With Magic 'Forever'
In theory couldn't we do a renegotiation for Serge? Seems to be a popular route to take and I could see Hennigan totally capitalizing on a contract like that, kinda giving Ibaka security prior to the start of the season in case of any potential injuries that can derail his big pay day.
(who am I kidding if Matthews still got his max after a damn ruptured Achilles then Ibaka is getting his max no matter what lol)

Wow...
Tobias= Role Player
Oladipo= High level specialist (predicted)
Sabonis= Rookie
vs
Ikaba= Legitimate and proven elite role player and specialist
Biyombo= High level specialist (predicted)
Green= Proven vet role player
I know which one I take and which one we now and in the future, and Tobias isn't on our roster...
but but you forgot about Coward

Things could change, but the first step is finding players who truly want to be here given our franchise's struggles with that. We're off to a good start with Vucevic, Ibaka, and Fournier.
No closer to a championship, but some stability and bargain contracts can't hurt.

Not that he doesn't have the right to change his mind, but it was very, very sincere when he said it. He actually cut the question off before it was finished to start his answer.

If he's really that damn sure then he should have absolutely no problem signing the contract now.

Yeah Doc...this is pretty much how I feel, but if you follow Serge, he is not one to run off at the mouth like so many others, he has always been considered a solid person, solid citizen and loyal to a fault!
Additionally, I think he is trying to put the Magic fanbase at ease regarding that single question..... will you also break our hearts and leave like Shaq and Dwightmare?
The man answered the question and I am glad about it, but I will celebrate when he is signed longterm! It would also be a plus if we make the playoffs as well!!

Waiting for the Championship parade at Lake Eola!

No. You have to have cap space to do that. The Magic have no space left.

Can Ibaka get the same extension now that will be available to him next summer? Cause if not, then he would probably wait till the offseason.

Aren't we better off waiting til the summer to extend him, so it's only his cap hold counting against the cap rather than his entire new contract? One of those options allows us to pursue potential star free agents. The other doesn't.

He can't be extended now. You have to have cap room available to do that. He's definitely hitting FA in the summer.

Yup... We should be able to offer a max contract to someone and then resign Ibaka next summer. No need to rush (and we can't anyway).

Are there cap holds on UFAs? ...I know we have his Bird Rights (that allow us to go over the cap to sign him).

Yup.....He seems like a no BS type of individual.... especially when it comes to interviews and has no problem cutting a question short or shooting them down. (Watch the Orlando Sentinel Interview when they asked him about his NBA 2K Stats.... No ****s were given in his response) He say what he feels. IF the Magic excel and treat him in the manner that he would like to be treated... i honestly think he sticks to his words. If things don't pan out in 8 months... then he has every right to change his mind. Given his relationship with Rob... I'm sure there is more of a concrete foundation than a "Wish and a prayer"
So it is encouraging to hear.... and when he plays well and resigns... then we pop the bubbly.

It won't be determined until the cap is set (and a new CBA could really change things as well), but he'll have 8 years of service, so that puts him in the middle tier range. With the cap projected at $102 million, his max first year salary would be approximately $28.8 million.

Welcome to the new cap world. The 10+ is projected at $33.6 million right now for next year.
If it makes you feel any better, each is only a slight jump from this year. ~$2.3 for the mid tier of 7-9 years experience and ~$2.7 for the highest tier of 10+ years of experience.

The number itself doesn't shock so much as who may be receiving it. Locking 28 mill up in a 12/8/2 player is a tough decision, but one that the Magic likely calculated back when they traded for him. I'm optimistic he can live up to a max deal though.

Nah. Dwight always said squirmy soft stuff like "my focus right now is just on this season and winning". Serge is also 1000000 times more mature than Coward Howard so i think he wouldnt say this unless it was genuine.
