Horny said he gave them no instructions on how to defend..just said go play...so uh..I guess it can only get better?

Right he isn't going to give them a defensive gameplan for the first preseason game. We were helping off Ryan Anderson for God's sakes.

Thoughts:

- When KP got on that hot streak in the 3rd quarter, he got a lot of threes within a triangle set. Interesting to see him on the curl as he was getting the open shot.

- With that said, the Rockets aren't going to be a good defensive team, so don't expect these opportunities to open up as much as it did in the 3rd quarter. I liked the last play of the 1st half where KP received the Jennings pass off a cut and got the dunk. Would like to see more of that and more action on the block, but that'll be till next time.

- The rhythm in the second half was much better and is probably more realistic to what we may see

- Melo had a mini run in the 3rd, but was a nonfactor for the most part

- Good to see Rose & Jennings drive and dish tonight. Jennings missed a lot of opportunities in the paint and also took some strange shots there in the 2nd, but it's a change from the last two years.

- it'll be nice to see Holiday & Lee as legit SGs who have some ability to drive and dish, but are great at 3&D

- Willy's not a good defender at all. Neither is Kuz. I liked Plumlee's energy on defense tho

- Cool to see Kuz in transition

- KOQ & the big men have to understand that you don't need to help Lee or Holiday on defense. Our rotations led to a lot of easy Rocket buckets

- Overall, pretty bad shooting night and pretty bad defensive night. But that's what preseason and practice is for

The players needed a scouting report to know that James Harden drives left and Anderson is an elite 3 point shooter?

Melo- If he let the game flow to him he would have shot better than 4/13 or whatever it was but still he was moving well however he needs to stop anticipating contact at the rim, it cost him 2 lay ups as he got to the cup but went for the contact instead of the finish.

Rose- His timing was off early but when we started running more PnR he seemed more in control, he was moving well.

KP- Shot the 3 ball well but thats really it, he left Ryan Anderson open way too many times for my liking. Also was letting Capela push him around in the post. Plays better around the perimeter where he has more space and can thrive off of attacking guards getting the ball to him.

Lee- Best player tonight, played D, shot the 3 and ran the ball. Had a bad TO though.

Jennings- Didn't shoot well but got some nice penetration, had a nice dump off to KP at the end of the 1st.

Willy- Solid overall, PnR D an obvious weakness

Lance- solid

KOQ- meh

Kuzminkas- played well for the time he was out there, nothing special no major complaints however.

Holiday- Man he's long, has some potential in this offense and could be a huge asset on Defense, would have liked to see him on Harden.

NDour, Randle, Plumlee, Randle showed good potential. Baker didn't get many touches. Willy is going to be much better than O'Quinn and a real asset. Kuz is a smart. talented basketball player. Instant scoring, great spacing and good passing from him.

I would keep all of the above, cut Tokoto, and make Sweet Lou a coach. Would that get us down to 15 players?

I'm not believing that Horny didn't give defensive instructions. He had to have been showing them a defensive strategy in pracitice. Why abandon that and free ball it? If he wanted to see their instincts, he could've paid more attention in practice or watched film on them from last year

I do not think this team will have any trouble scoring the basketball. Coach needs to go all out implementing defensive strategies in practice though.

For real though. I think he could be someone that could fit that Lou Amundson role at the end of the bench. Sure, he would likely rarely suit up, but he would be a great practice big. You know that guy will go 110% all the time. That's something that I think guys Nature Boy (N'Dour) and Plumlee would be able to bring to the team.

I always like when we have someone on the team that you might seriously question if they have a screw loose in their head at times (In a good way.. not the complete lack of B-Ball IQ resulting in complete headscratching plays type of screw loose)

Like when we brought in KMart... I love that type of ish. A crazy S.O.B that takes no B.S. Hopefully Noah can stay healthy enough to be that type of player for the starting lineup

KP is going to be an all-star this year

Rose and Jennings is such a huge upgrade from what we had last year. They both can penetrate and make plays and if you don't guard them close enough they will hit that mid range off the dribble.

We are making the playoffs if healthy. I'm not worried about the defense because we were actually above average defensively last year and with the acquisitions we made this summer we will definitely be better than last year.

SMAC-K wrote:How do you guys think Rose did running point? I think he was magnificent especially when he got loose in the 2nd half. He was making beautiful reads and hitting guys with laser passes, making excellent cross court passes to the corner shooters, wasn't ignoring KP or Melo and made sure they both got the ball in their sweet spots. KP went off in the 3rd but Rose assisted him on almost every shot. Love the chemistry between those two already.

As an orchestrator he was adequate and will get better. Speed is still there, once this court crap is over I think we may see an Allstar level player. Chauncey Bilups seems to think so. :D On a related note, Jennings looked really good for spurts. It was weird seeing those bullet passes and penetrating drives .... a good "weird" no doubt. He is damned fast as well.

Right now I'm liking a bunch of our rookies.
Randle, Kuz, and Kp's buddy have real talent on the offensive side of the ball. It make take then some time to mature....
I finally see Plumlee's potential as well. He's got quite the motor on him and is quite strong, looks like a good to very good lunch pail player , not a scrub.

Melo played in a vacuum ,but I think he will rechannel DAD/Olympic Melo after getting more repps in with his teammates.
KOQ- I say we should trade him while he still has value ...We could uses a dead eye shooter..
Lance Thomas was pretty bad tonight....but he'll be ok once he decides to move away from playing like he's Rudy Gay - and move towards playing like Bruce Bowen again.

Houston isnt as good as they looked tonight but they have do have the advantage of knowing how they want to play.
We also need to establish what we are going to do early since teams will be looking to take advantage of our lack of familiarity with each other.

Noah is hugely important to this team, I think his absence was felt tonight. We sure as hell need his leadership on the floor.

Man I am really trying to give Kyle a new chance but man he is making it tough. I saw the same player from last year and he just doesn't look good. Really want him to succeed and provide something positive on the floor but man he is brutal to watch. I agree with most of your points too, good post.

My view of Marshall went from he's the b-ball equivalent to Chumlee... to, woah, this dude is playing like he's actually a Plumlee

...Or just watched them in person in an NBA game setting against a live opponent. That is much better than practice or film.

The reason he would do that now is because it is a preseason game and it doesn't count for anything but getting in reps and evaluating players.

It's different from practice. Guys need to feel of playing other teams. First pre-season game is usually a dud in some aspect. Example GSW vs Toronto(KD looked like crap) now at home he's looking good vs a Clippers team who's in their first game. Hornacek just wanted them to play ball nothing more but of course this is New York so you already know, team sucks, Melo sucks, Noah is already injured, Triangle sucks, Phil won't let Horny run his system, KP can do no wrong, etc.
