Sort of bummed that they signed Paul to a 2 year deal instead of a 4 year Hinkie special. That would have been a bigger advantage over Stauskas and Hollis. As it is, there really is not much of a difference, as none will be on the roster in 1-2 years.

Trimming the Sixers roster to 15: What happens Poll?

Post#22 » by Ericb5 » Wed Oct 5, 2016 11:00 pm

I'm not sure who should be cut to get to 15, but long term, McConnell, Holmes, Stauskus, Grant, Brand, Thompson, Sergio, Henderson, Bayless, and maybe even Covington are competing for 1, or maybe 2 spots on this roster once we get good.

Sauce cut, Brand cut, Paul kept based on game 1. Why on Earth would they waste a roster spot on Brand?

Kinda tired of McConnell too - I think he's too predictable and a ball killer as a PG to be effective at this level. We're thin at PG though, so I think he sticks, but it's going to be a problem if he needs to get a lot of minutes this year. He's not going to help the important players develop with his style of play.

While TJ isn't even an ideal backup for a lot of teams, I still kind of like the guy. He just has some grit. Good energy some of his teammates feed off of whether it's on court or on the bench. He's not a bad facilitator in my mind. Outmatched vs. a lot of starters but I think he brings more to the table overall than Ish Smith for instance. Backup PG of the future? No, probably not. I'm content with him for now, who knows.

I've always liked TJ from the beginning. He has some grit, as you put it, he is a positive communicator, and teammate, and I think that he has legitimate point guard skills. I always liked him better than Wroten for example even though Wroten is a much better athlete with more talent.

He just plays way too many minutes for his skills. He should be playing 10-15 minutes in some games, and less in others. He wouldn't be my next cut at this point is what I'm saying, but he probably won't be on the team a year from now.

Our problem isn't that we have dleague players anymore. We just have players that should be rounding out rosters instead of playing major minutes. They get exposed if they play too much.

I think it shows how much they value Jah, who they frequently site brand is there to mentor. And Jah calls him "his vet"

The preseason game was a replay of the past 2 years of him badly missing open three pointers. I'd much rather give Paul a shot on this roster than either Stauskas or Thompson to be honest.

Paul played a decent game, but I'm not going to make a decision based on one preseason game. If Stauskas showed improvements during the training camps etc. he should get a chance to prove himself after his first quiet offseason. Perhaps Paul has a better shot at actually improving the squad this year, but there's still have a very slim chance of Stauskas getting a decent combo guard. I'd take the risk and keep investing in Stauskas (and Thompson).

I think the Elton Brand cut is quite logical, giving him a 1 million guaranteed contract and add a coaching salary on top of that to mentor the players. With Embiid, Noel, Okafor, Holmes and perhaps Saric there is no playing time available for Brand anyway.

I would cut TJ, Hollis, Brand, Stauskas and even Paul and sign some useful vets.

Nice in theory but who are the useful vets?

Don't know. Guys like Chalmers, Norris Cole, Kevin Martin or Gary Neal.

post-brand announcement - pretty set.
First 15:

Bayless | McConnell | Sergio
Henderson | Stauskas | TLC
Covington | Grant | Thompson
Simmons | Saric | Holmes
Embiid | Okafor | Noel

monkey-wrenches could be 1- a tyus-esque trade 2- cutting hollis and picking up a waiver player.

but that's pretty much the squad next wed.

hopefully barber, webb, and long make it to the 87ers without getting scooped up.

Would you cut Hollis over Stauskas? I know its a fight between garbage and trash but I've actually seen Hollis make a 3 pointer.
They say an analytics man doesn't have a heart, but I ran the numbers and nothing can be further from the truth - Sam Hinkie probably

productivity - hollis has outperformed nik (yes bad vs worse type thing but still)

but contract/value around the league-wise + Brown's comments on Nik recently + all the media stuff with Nik always... i feel like the team would keep him over hollis. Hollis is kind of the face of the bad years in a sense. while guys like Covington and embiid are the definition of what those years were about (finding hidden gems, drafting for upside and potential franchise players)

but they ARE the two worse players on the team in most people's eyes.

Yeah, Brand killed my bump. On the other hand, it was the best decision.

Stauskas will probably make it unless someone unexpected gets cut from another team.

Yeah Colangelo is going to be watching that waiver wire pretty closely.
