Harrison's Big Freshman Year Continues

An afterthought in a crowded Maryland backfield entering the fall, Lorenzo Harrison has emerged as a star on the Terps' offense. His strong rookie compaign continued Saturday with a career-high 105-yard performance in Maryland's win over Michigan State, which earned him Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday morning.

The 5-foot-8, 193-pound running back from DeMatha High is Maryland's leading rusher this season with 502 yards and needs only 188 yards to break Lamont Jordan's school record for rushing yards y a freshman. He's also fifth nationally among true freshmen in rushing yards and yards per game (71.7). His 7.7 yards per carry average ranks fourth in the Big Ten, with Maryland sophomore Ty Johnson ranking first at 10.3 yards per run.

Harrison was the least touted of four 2016 signees from local powerhouse DeMatha, but his ultra-shifty running style and speed have made him a big-play threat upon arrival.

"If we added up Lorenzo’s side to side yards, he may have had 400 yards," Maryland coach DJ Durkin joked on Saturday.
