Wizards vs Sixers, Thursday 10-6-2016

Post#1 » by montestewart » Thu Oct 6, 2016 11:33 pm

Thought this game was Friday, but here it is on Comcast. I'll try to figure out how to sticky thread at the half (no one shows the new guy nothing). Looks like Sixers no-names are cakewalking, up by 10 in the 1st. Nice!

Wow, we are Bill Walton hooooorrrrible w/o Wall.

Bright side is Oubre on a hot streak looks absolutely sick--don't get me wrong I know it's a hot streak but still.

On any given night (or quarter), a couple of players will looks good, in this case, Gortat and Oubre in the 1st. A few crumbs to feed self-delusion. I smell championship...or bitter almonds, perhaps.

My first quarter notes:

Burke is so awful defensively. Gortat looks out of sorts. Don't know if it's him declining or just not focusing on ball over the summer. The complete lack of defensive report between these two are the primary reason the team has gotten shellshocked in the first two games. Kieff is frustrating as usual. Mid range chucks with 15 on the clock is no bueno, but his passing ability can be sublime. If there's a player that needs to "get out of his own way", it's him. Smith... don't really have the words. I can't believe the amount of money he's making.

Burke & Smith are on-court disasters. What a waste of nearly 8.5 million. When you add Nicholson who is like a break-in-case of emergency off the bench gunner at 6 million, that's 14.5 million we've blown this off-season.

Gortat is in his usual early season daze. He usually doesn't start balling until February. By that time he may have already lost the starting job to Mahinmi.

Burke is worse than Maynor bad, but if Sato continues his play he might not get any minutes, kid looks like the real deal.

Between Morris, Smith, and Nicholson, this is one of the worst power forward rotations in the NBA...IMHO.

If we are paying Smith a ton of money it's a problem but otherwise I like having an interior guy with a jumper and he's gotten a few boards too.

Yep, we needed a starting PF this offseason. Not the 3rd & 4th bigs off the bench like we've got in Smith & Nicholson.

Assists too. For me the issue is $14.5 million spent on "solid bench additions" (who aren't really) as if the top of the rotation was set. That money would have been better spent finding a front line player, and if there was no one available in FA, use it to acquire a player some other way. When the top of the rotation is solid, then you can start worrying about the fringe.

Embiid is a freak of nature. He dwarfs Mahinmi and Gortat. If he can stay healthy and keep his weight down he's going to be the best player in the league in a few years.

Didn't surprise me that Burke drained that.

His bball IQ in a team basketball setting still needs a lot of work (even at Kansas, that was the question about him). He needs to become quicker at reacting to what's happening on the floor before he can handle a greater offensive load.

Embiid is definitely a freak physically, he has that Yao type of size where he looks like an NBA 2k created player compared to everyone else. But he really can't afford to be any heavier than he is now. It feel like if he were to fall over, he'd split in two like a log of wood

Down by 10 after 1, down by 5 after 2. At this rate they should lose by 1.25 points, give or take.

2nd Quarter:

Gortat was actively trying to overcompensate for Burke and it ended in disaster on multiple occasions. I've never seen a duo play a Sergio freaking Rodriguez pick and roll so aggressively. I haven't watched much of Burke throughout his career, but I almost want to say that he's trying too hard.

As others have said, the amount of money tied up between Burke/Smith is just tilt inducing. We could have just signed Gerald Henderson with that money and have been secure at the 2 spot.

Unfortunately, young bigs with a history of back or feet problems usually don't stay healthy - and he's already had both. Every time he slips or falls, people are going to gasp unless he can somehow stay healthy for a couple of years.
