Al Horford as a Celtic...

35 minutes
20 points
16 rebounds
+41

That was...+41

@seangrandePBP

I've been the same, pretty in and out in the games. But he's looked great from what I've seen. Solid jumper. Surprisingly good bringing the ball up court.

I see that and say, he can get even better the longer he plays with the guys. Might think I'm BS but I'm dead serious, offensively and defensively he (they) can clean up some things. when the guys fully gel with him it will help too. Watch.

Hey nice to see ya back, don't think I've seen you here in a while. Just thinking back to that great call you made that we would beat the Heat by ten hahaha (yeah I'm also drunk right now).

Missed the game. Any commentary on how Jaylen, Marcus, and Terry played specifically?

Our starting 5 is elite, +/- says it all. I believe Green and Olynyk will elevate that bench significantly so i'm not too worried. They actually did a good job in maintaining the result and not blowing it away.

Missed the game, had dinner plans, but saw Young had 6 boards!? What? Was ready to call him the next Beal when we drafted him, then gave him a pass year two, and then completely wrote him off. Now he's looking like a player? Oy vey. This is a very confusing roller coaster.

How did RJ look? I still think he can play in the league too, but it's a matter if attitude and confidence. I know they all play the same position but in a perfect world we keep them both. James must have realized you get paid a lot to play basketball compared to other professions. Does his defense look passable yet? If it does, good friend Gerald is expendable.

I'm mid moving and am in the "out of Seattle, not settled in Bend" stage and haven't been able to watch anything yet. Been great to read the comments here though. Glad to hear Al is elevating the starters and T-Rozzy is grabbing that rotation spot! Another 10 days or so and I'll finally be settled...

Favorite highlight of the game.

Great link to Jay King's story about Horford's play thus far.

Had work. Didn't watch. Again.

But, here's what I like from reading the thread slash watching highlights slash checking the boxscore:

- The starting unit all in double digit +/- for the second game in a row.
- Bradley's assists. (Too much to ask for him to pull a Batum and go from 1.5/game to 5/game in one off-season?)
- Is it just me, or does Horford look bouncier and more mobile than I thought he was for some reason...
- Smart's 2pt shooting. He's 9-18 (50%) overall, but that's with going 0-6 on 3PA so far. Meaning he's 9-12 (75%) on 2PA.
- I remain in daily astonishment that Young is really going to make this team.

Also, some kind words from the Hornets board:

Love that they're posting him up, first of all. And love how he uses rhythm and surprise instead of athleticism with that smooth, lazy face-up.

Lots of good choices for the cigar. I voted for Rozier simply because I thought he deserved at least one vote after having such a solid, great-shooting game. Horford and Brown have been great, but the surprise for me so far is James Young. He has definitely come to camp with a purpose.

The problem with Rozier is he has been awful defensively. People here say he can step into Bradley's role in the future because he is athletic. It simply doesn't work that way. Sergio Rodriguez and Ramon Session were getting where they wanted when they wanted. He also gets Velcro-ed to screens. Stevens eventually switched Smart on Sessions and there was an immediate difference. Terry can be a good defender but he has not shown it these first few preseason games.

He hasn't been good on offense either outside of the 4th quarter. Dribbles the hell out the ball. He has been a lights out shooter though. Hopefully he slows it all down.

Team Cigar

PS-
Did Nick Batum just Hoodwink Charlotte. He looked terrible. Almost a Blue Chip point shaving level of shot selection, followed by not getting back on defense. It was strange to watch somebody play that badly
I apologize for the things I have said in the past.

It's pretty easy to summarize -versatility. Not just jack of all trades versatility but competent smooth versatility. Last night he scored in the post, from mid range, from 3, on a dunk-and-1 from an inbounds play, rebounded, defended, brought the ball up in transition, and made quick outlet passes. He was good in the pick and roll and the pick and pop.

It's nice to see some offensive progress from Marcus, I've been a believer since the beginning just off of how balls-to-the-wall he plays the game but seeing the offense come along over the off season is a relief. He also did a great job of shutting down Ramon when he took over defending him for Terry. Terry looked smooth for a second year player, he's definitely going to get minutes if that shot keeps falling and another guy you can see the effort he has been putting in right away. Jaylen gives me wood, enough said. Horford is a perfect fit for the share the ball mentality of the Celtics, really nice consolation prize for the Durant sweepstakes, and while probably being even a better fit doesn't compensate for not being on the Durant level of superstar it helps close the gap a little. Both would have been nice though ;). Bradley once again has come into the season looking like an even more complete player, and even James Young is starting to look like a player. The culture of hard work is certainly there for these guys, it's going to be a fun year.

Funny, I didn't watch Batum all that closely last night, my two year old was climbing all over me, but I listened to Zach Lowe's podcast with Kevin Arnovitz (sp?) the other day and he said that GM's around the league think that now that Batum got his money "he would go back to hating basketball again." So that sounded pretty ominous. I was a big fan of Batum last year for the play he displayed and thought he might look good on the Celtics, but again this is why I'm a fan and not a GM.

OMG, James Young looks like an actual professional basketball player. Nothing to do with shots falling or not falling, all to do with the little things, getting loose balls, rebounds, making impacts out of his area, running hard in transition, moving the ball. I'm shocked. I thought he was a lost cause. Whatever switch flipped for him, it was 100% mental.

RJ is trying too hard. I think he has the better skillset between him and Young but right now he's trying to do too much, trying to make the roster in one play. He just needs to settle down, let the game come to him, focus on what he can control. He's playing tight. Even if he doesn't make the roster, I think he projects as the better player (between him and Young) down the road. But he's in an anxious place right now.

Rozier is playing tight too and trying to do too much. The diff between him and RJ is that even when he's trying to do too much he's got that athleticism to fall back on, and so he still makes good plays even if the overall net effect isn't positive, I mean some of those boards he gets or those plays he makes with the ball are breathtaking, nobody can stay in front of him. That said, watching him running point on the 2nd team is going to be frustrating. I get a Reggie Jackson vibe from him, great individual #s but struggles to make team-wide impact (that is, he doesn't make his teammates better).

Mickey looks lost. The weight he put on sapped his quickness. The plays he used to make around the rim on offense and at the rim on defense are now a half-step late. The strength gains haven't translated to the court at all. I was hoping he'd add a 3 point shot, but haven't seen him even looking for it. His confidence is toast.

Still don't understand why Jackson got a guarantee, he's the fly in the ointment creating the roster crunch. There are probably 20 guys in the D-League with the same skillset he has. In fact, we had one in Portland last year and in SL this summer - Corey Walden - someone who is a better athlete, defender, and facilitator. Shot 38% from deep last season in the D-League. If we wanted an uber athletic defense first 3rd string PG outta college, there were plenty who didn't even get drafted. Gary Payton the Second comes to mind.

Everybody else is looking good IMO. Brown looks really comfortable in his role and I love that Brad is already using him some at PF. He's going to be a matchup problem for most backup 4s in the league and it'll really give him space to continue to develop his off-the-bounce game. Smart's done a lot of skill work in the summer, his dribble is tighter, he's picking his spots better, everything looks just a little bit more refined. I wish he'd refine his body one of these years too - that's the last step to get to that Kyle Lowry level. AB and Crowder continue to improve. Al is almost the perfect Brad big man. Love going small with him at 5. Loved the Smart/AB/Brown/Crowder/Al lineup too, such a cudgel to stomp teams with...
The leaks are real...the news is fake.

No Olynyk in the starting lineup. He needs to play with the athletic bricklaying hardo squad that is Rozier/Smart/Brown.

AB looks great. In the past he was the weak link in the ball movement department, but he's making quick, smart passes.

The guy that looks like the weak link now is Amir - the only starter who can't shoot or drive. Shouldn't matter too much, but with the way we're playing, the balls going to keep finding him. Here's hoping KO can make a big leap and get some minutes with the starters. Having another triple threat out there would really take our O to the next level.
