Re: 2016-2017 League MVP Top 3 Prediction
I'm going with Kawhi. If the Spurs finish within 5-7 games of the Warriors I see him winning the "value" conversation over Curry/Durant as their relative values are diminished competing with each other (unless one takes a clear back seat, which I do not believe will happen).
Westbrook and Harden will get some votes, but as has been noted in this thread, team wins are extremely important in the MVP discussion, and unless one of them sneaks into a top 3 spot in the playoffs I don't think they can overcome Kawhi. If LeBron wants it, he can take it, but I think he is more concerned about titles now, and I wouldn't be stunned if he takes a stretch off to rest and relies more on Kyrie and Love (not that he has to, but he has the option to). I am more of a believer in LeBron winning Finals MVP, than Regular Season MVP this upcoming season.
It may sound crazy, and he has no chance of winning it, but I would not be stunned to see Al Horford garner some votes. As the most recognizable face on the Celtics, if they finish in the top 2-3, it would not be unthinkable he could get some 5th place votes.
Overall something like this:
1) Kawhi
2) Westbrook
3) Curry
4) LeBron
5) Harden
6) Durant
7) Horford
8) Lillard Maybe?

Re: 2016-2017 League MVP Top 3 Prediction
1. Kawhi
2. Westbrook
3. LeBron
Considering the Warriors are the villains of the league now, and as Kerr said, they won't be chasing 74 wins, I doubt Curry or Durant wins it. LeBron won't go 100% in RS, but still enough to finish top 3. Westbrook will put up huge numbers and if OKC wins 50 games, he'll be a very serious candidate to win it. I expect Kawhi to improve his game even more this season, and the Spurs will most likely win 60+ games (or at least 55), and considering he already finished 2nd last season, that makes him the #1 candidate for MVP, IMO.

Re: 2016-2017 League MVP Top 3 Prediction
I think it is going to be Curry or Durant. Don't forget Durant is going to rack up the assists. He had 7 the other game pretty easily. He gets them easily the same reason Green gets a high apg so easily, because he plays with such great shooters. I'm not saying the two aren't great passers it is just that I think it makes is easier playing with such great shooters.
I think outside of those 2 it will probably be Westbrook in the discussion since he will put up crazy numbers. Towns could be in the discussion like someone said. But I really think it is going to whoever goes off the most on the Warriors out of Curry and Durant.

Re: 2016-2017 League MVP Top 3 Prediction
LeBron is going to be coasting throughout the season. I expect his numbers to dip a little along the lines of 24/7/6.
My predictions are:
KD/Kawhi/ and my dark horse pick, Damian Lillard.
Yes I know Stephen Curry is also a MVP-caliber player, however with the addition of KD, I think the whole outlook of him as the clearcut MVP will decrease too. I predict KD's number to be better than his.

no way they win anything close to 55 games.
if the rockets win 55 games, and harden puts up similar numbers he had last year with better shooting percentages. Would you consider it a robbery if Harden didnt win the award

If that happens he will win MVP. I just dont see that happening and the video posted does not make me change my opinion.

I get the hype behind Westbrook, but do we really think an MVP will be on a ~45 win team?

I think Harden will average 33 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds. With a TS% of 0.63. If Houston win more than 55 then the award is his.
Kawhi and LeBron are my other choices.

Re: 2016-2017 League MVP Top 3 Prediction
I'm going with Kawhi leonard. He'll have both the stats , defensive presence, and wins to get it. Westbrook and harden will both have insane offensive numbers but their teams will be the 7th and 8th seeds.
I think people are under estimating just how good Durant's numbers will be. He's going to fill up the stat sheet on that warriors team.

Nah, it's fine the way it is. Otherwise players that average great numbers on bad teams would have a realistic shot at the MVP award. IMO if your play doesn't result in team wins you are not the most valuable Player out there.
As the majority already said, Westbrook and Harden will have insane numbers but probably won't win enough games to get it. To me, their teams aren't even a lock for the Play Offs.
I think it's going to be between Leonard and Paul. CP3 could finally get the award he should have won in 2008. HM are George and maybe Towns and the Brow, depending on their team record.

Re: 2016-2017 League MVP Top 3 Prediction
Lebron bc he is the best and also by default.
Curry and Durant have no shot for winning the mvp next season and probably for the foreseeable future.
Westbrooks team record will eliminate him from mvp.
Cp3/Griffin cancel each other out and neither will put up the gaudy stats to win mvp.
Anthony Davis, even if he takes a big leap with a mvp caliber season, can't win because his team record won't be good enough.
Harden is the biggest threat, and he isn't much of a threat as he plays no defense and his team may not finish with a good enough record anyways.
Lebron is the clear favorite. Intangibles like the fact that he hasn't won mvp in 3 years, he proved he was the real mvp last year over curry etc further tilt it in his favor.

Two years ago his team also won 56 games, so how well the Rockets do will be a large factor and I'm assuming people don't think they will win the amount of games required to get him into the top 3 over other guys who will win more and also have nice production.

They have a roster to matches Mike D'Antoni's system, and we know what that will do. I reckon the Rockets can actually be a Top 3 seed although I doubt it.

2016-2017 League MVP Top 3 Prediction
If Durant puts up 25ppg on great efficiency and the Dubs have the best record in the NBA by a large margin, I wonder if the voters would give it to him
I wonder because when LBJ first joined the Heat, everyone said his MVP days were over but he quickly took the reigns and that narrative flipped. Durant could do the same if he takes the alpha role from Steph.

Durant will have the best stats on the team with the best record. Think KD will average a career high in assists (6), still average about 28 PPG with 8-9 rebounds..
LMAO. So you believe the Warrior egos are going to take a backseat to the new guy, in spite of the fact that they have won a ring together without him, and also have the all-time record for most wins in a season?
Good luck with that.

Curry might be in the top 3, but no way Durant is top 3 without Curry also being there. Curry got his pride, yo.

Re: 2016-2017 League MVP Top 3 Prediction
Ever since the media began voting for MVPs some 35 years ago, its been exclusively a 55 win+ contending team award, no matter how individually brilliant a player is. Now it might be possible to finish 3rd or some such while on a lesser team (although still a winning team), but for the most part the first cut you have to make is of anybody you think will be on a non-contending team. So, can Westbrook win 55 without Durant? Is D'Antoni's philosophy going to revive the Rockets to 55? Even if they did, after Harden lost so much respect the voters even somewhat unprecedently dropped him from the All-NBA teams? I take it as a given that Davis, Cousins and Towns aren't winning 55. Was Vogel really holding the Pacers back, and now they are going to jump up and contend?
It leaves a likely list of the same old characters from the same old contending teams:
LeBron
Curry
Durant
CP3
Blake
Leonard
which is tough since Curry and Durant will trash likely trash each other's numbers, and CP3 and Blake are already inseparable and probably maxed out. If one of the other stars can elevate their team to that 55+ threshhold they could make a strong candidate.
